YOUR BLOOD CAN SAVE A LIFE

After many accidents on local roads over the Easter weekend, the country's blood reserves are at an all time low. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) made an urgent appeal to all blood donors to come forward and donate.

Ravi Reddy, the chief operational officer of SANBS explained that the shortage is due to an above average use of blood over the Easter weekend. “This years Easter accident rate has doubled that of last year, which resulted in an above-average increase in blood usage for vehicle accident victims. The public holidays in between also affected the collection of blood” she said.

In response to this appeal a special event was held on 7 April, which was declared Blood Day, and mass donations were made at the Klerksdorp Banquet Hall.

A friendly competition took place between four of Klerksdorp's property agents  Better Bond, Bond choice, Wizard and Dial Sure  with prizes going to the estate agency which donated the most blood on the day. 'We started off with a big bang, and people kept on coming in to donate blood. We ended this event with a great 58 units of blood received!” exclaims Hannah Terblanche, a member of the SANBS. “Thanks to the City of Matlosana, Hi-Fi Corporation, Rio Casino, the Rotary Club Klerksdorp and Bond Choice for all their extra help” she added.

Bond Choice won first prize, with the most donations, and won a DVD player from Hi-Fi Corporation. Those with the Best Spirit were Realty One, winning a gift basket from the Rotary Club of Klerksdorp. The Best Spirit prize for non agents went to Hi-Fi Corporation. The prize for the Best Dressed was awarded to Snowline Agents, winning them exclusive tickets to the Louise Carver show at Rio Casino. The Best Effort prize went to Better Bond who also won Louise Carver tickets.
