Our Mayor Is Staying! The Honourable Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, Councilor China Dodovu is staying on to continue his good work as Mayor of the Matlosana Municipality. There was some concern in the city, as the story spread that the Mayor would be leaving to take over as Premier of the province. Elections took place during the ANC's sixth provincial conference at Sun City from 11 to 13 May, where various factions fought for control ahead of next year's general elections. The fiercest battle for the control of the day to day running of the ANC in the province was between the current secretary, Supra Mahumapelo and Dodovu. The people's favourite, Dodovu, was however not elected to the position of North West provincial secretary and will be staying on until the end of his term as Matlosana Mayor, which is good news for the city. Dodovu has done much good for the municipality, including facilitating the eradication of the bucket system, sports, and empowering women and youth. While many in the city are certain he would make an excellent Premier for the province, they are happy to have him staying right here were the city can benefit directly under his leadership. Maleka Mashego, involved in the Mining Sector, says he thinks it is good for the city that the Executive Mayor was not elected, due to the Mayors much needed presence regarding the continuity of development in Matlosana. “As the business sector we have a good working relationship with the Municipality and Dodovu has been showing good leadership in the projects that we started with the Municipality.” Plakie Semelo, a resident of Jouberton said “Thank God that he did not go!” when he heard the good news, “Matlosana Agenda 16 will be maintained, and we are still expecting more from him.” Semelo reckons he is the right person for Matlosana, as Dodovu has created jobs for the youth and women, has done a lot for sports and education in the city. Pastors wife MaMoruti Mohoto says Dodovu must not view the outcome of the conference negatively. “If God appointed him for the City of Matlosana there's absolutely nothing anyone can do. The city is his training ground and God is preparing him for something big” she said, “He is also a pioneer of Agenda 16, he must be in the City to ensure that his vision is achieved, to ensure smooth administration and leadership.” “He is a good leader with lots of energy, which we really need” says Normna Rakumako, a Jouberton based dressmaker “The Executive Mayor has put our city on the map. The city is respected. Since his term of office, the economy in the city hasgrown tremendously, as well as the development.” The conference is the first in a series of provincial showdowns taking place over the next two months where the Mbeki-Zuma proxy battles will continue to be fought. The province was divided between supporters of Mahumapelo - considered a Mbeki supporter - and Klerksdorp Mayor China Dodovu - a Zuma supporter - for the powerful position of provincial secretary. The North West provincial secretary Supra Mahumapelo has been re-elected to his position, and so were the other four candidates on his proposed list. He defeated Dodovu by just 196 votes in the fiercely contested provincial conference which ended late on 13 May. - By Elizabeth Okes |
