The Winter Knights Of The Round Table After the success of last year's “Winter Knights of the Round Table” event, Klerksdorp Round Table is proud to announce that they will be staging the annual event at Rio Casino this year. Some 1600 Round Tablers across this region will be spending a night in the cold at various venues with no protection other than a Round Table T Shirt and jeans and will rely entirely on the generosity of the public to survive the icy night. The aim of this unique event is to raise donations of food, clothes and blankets for the less fortunate. Financial donations are also welcome. All donations will be passed on to various nominated charities, which will be announced in the press at a later date. This effort forms part of a charity initiative being staged across the entire Southern African region, from Durban to Swakopmund and Polokwane to Cape Town. This event will take place on Saturday evening, 28 June, in the Rio Casino's Parking Area from 6pm till 12pm. The Round Table invites all members of the community to come to the Tusk Rio Casino on the evening of 28 June and to donate clothing, blankets and food items. Petrol price over R10 per litre In less than a week, motorists will be hit by the seventh fuel price increase this year as petrol goes up by an estimated 70c a litre. According to a price forecast based on information available recently and the current price regulation guidelines stipulated by the department of minerals and energy, the cost of petrol, currently hovering just below the R10/litre mark, is set to rocket at midnight on 1 July. Analysts are expecting an increase of about 68c/litre, although the final figure will be announced by the department of mineral and energy Affairs after 1pm on 27 June. Motorists are now paying between R9,81 and R9,96 a litre. After the hike they could be paying about R10,60/litre. Peter Morgan, CEO of the Fuel Retailers' Association, describes the ongoing price hikes as a "death spiral" that is going to lead to between 10 percent and 15 percent of service stations going out of business before the end of the year. "If you think about it carefully, your service stations have a 64c/litre mark-up. That's less than 6 percent for a business that has to pay cash to oil companies and is open 24 hours a day, every single day of the year," Morgan said. "Motorists think service stations make a profit when the price goes up, but it's not the case. The margin is fixed by the government and they can't pass these costs on.” On 13 June the Klerksdorp Rotaract Club hosted a Soup Day for the children of the Pelanomi School, a rural school situated on the outskirts of Klerksdorp, which accommodates approximately 240 children ranging from 3 to 15 years old. Members of the Rotary Club handed each learner a warm cup of soup, served with slices of fresh bread. According to Rotarian Deon Calder, the smiles of appreciation on the children's faces “warmed up our hearts. This was yet another very successful project for the Rotaract Club of Klerksdorp” he said. |
