IFAA Championships At La Hoff Primary The International Fine Arts Association (IFAA) SA Championships 2008 semi finals took place on 25 and 26 July at La Hoff primary School. Dancers from the North West and Free State took part, and Klerksdorp was well represented by talented dancers, despite strong competition. There are several categories: Ballet, Modern, Tap, Disco-Jazz, Hip Hop/Funk, Ballroom, Cheerleading, Freestyle and Show Modelling. Participants compete within their age group and 79 dancers have made it through to the finals which will be held in Pretoria in August. At this event all the provinces compete against each other and the SA team is chosen to compete in the International Championships held in Mauritius later this year. What are the Fine Arts South African Championships? The association explains as follows “The up-and-coming rugby player is publicised... but do we know who the next great singer is or who the brilliant next modern dancer is? No! This is why the I.F.A.A. South African Championships of Fine Arts was created.” “This event aims to showcase various art schools best performers, introducing them to the competitive world of dance and performance, and preparing them to participate internationally. The association calls it an honest approach to art competitions. “Realistic is how we like to refer to it. We aim to educate and inspire performers to be the best they can be!” See page 3 for more photos of the dancers and visit www.yourcity.co.za for pictures of the winners. The chances of a cut in the petrol price rose last week, as oil traded nearly R190 below recent record levels and the rand remained relatively firm. The fall in the oil price came despite the risks posed to supply by tensions between the US and Iran. Avhapfani Tshifularo, the pricing adviser to the SA Petroleum Industry Association, said that there could be a cut in fuel prices of about 15c a litre next month - the first reduction since September 2007. Gauteng motorists are paying R10.70 a litre for petrol at the pump, from R7.16 a year ago. Oil prices were tempered last week by attempts in the US congress to restrain speculation in the oil market. But Nicky Weimar, a senior economist at Nedbank, said there were also fundamental reasons for a lower price, as the global economy slowed and oil exporters invested in new capacity. Azar Jammine, the chief economist at Econometrix, has predicted that oil prices could soon fall to $100 a barrel, cutting the local fuel price to R8 a litre. Oil is not the only commodity affected by a dimmer outlook for global growth and other commodity prices are also slipping. Nedbank Capital said the performance of the benchmark CRB commodities index "indicates the likelihood of a significant correction or at least some consolidation" before the uptrend resumed. - IOL Don't forget that the Escapades Theatre at Rio Casino will showcase 135 talented dancers on 2 August as they compete for a chance to perform at the Dancing Kaleidoscope to be hosted by the Le Danze Company on 15 and 16 August. The dancers will also present their best performances in order to achieve Gold, Silver or Bronze medals. To many of the dancers this may be their first performance on a theatre stage, or in front of an audience. Tickets for the Rio-Matlosana Youth Dance Festival will be sold at the door and seating is limited. Don't miss out! |
