KLERKSDORP HIGH SCHOOL TOP TOURISM STUDENTS TO REPRESENT SA AT THE TOURISM YOUTH CONFERENCE IN FRANCE

Last week Thursday, KHS announced that two of their Grade 11 top tourism students, Pearl Pheza and Melissa Meyer, will be representing South Africa at the Global Travel & Tourism Youth Conference in Niece, France from the 16th to the 21th of November 2008.

These outstanding students won the overall national Aldo Papone competition where Grade 11 Tourism Students in the whole of South Africa are required to identify a tourism site based on this year's theme “Responsible Tourism Development”. Both students chose to work on Pilanesburg National Park as a case study, and as a result, their project was voted the best nationally. The 33-page case study document was then uploaded onto the internet and out of it, the students had to work closely with their tourism teacher, Mrs. Yolande Heymans and drama teacher, Mrs. Susan van den Berg in developing a
45 minute presentation for the conference in France.

“Every year the National Business Initiative in conjunction with the Global Travel & Tourism Partnership launch the international Aldo Papone awards where the Grade 11 Tourism students compete,” said Mrs. Heymans. “We are excited to have two of our very own tourism students nominated to represent SA at the youth conference. KHS is very proud of Pearl and Melissa as they've worked very hard to get to where they are. We are 100% behind them and look forward to representing SA and the North West Province well in France.”
The criterion for the presentation is interactive as the students will need to sell the Pilanesburg National Park as North West Province's Responsible Tourism Development destination. “Our presentation will need to prove that Pilanesburg National Park applies economical, social and environmental tourism practices. Pearl and I are confident that the use of a puppet show to illustrate the three key practices, will effectively communicate to the audience at the conference,” mentioned Melissa Meyer. “We do believe that Pilanesburg could do more in all the areas but so far, they are way ahead of the other tourism destination places in the North West Province, hence we've selected them for our case study.
The aim of the presentation at the conference is also to solicit for international funding for the national park. “We will be handing out the 33-page case study document and souvenirs to the audience and should they be interested in the product and wish to contribute financially, we will be able to address other challenges,” added Mrs. Heymans.
Some of the sponsors for travel, accommodation, flights, and souvenirs are Global Travel & Tourism Partnerships and Local partnerships (Pick 'n Pay, SA Weber Services, Matlosana Municipality, Tusk Rio, Gogo Gaeruki Motjale (Executive producer of the DVD), Department of North West Economic Development & Tourism, North West & Tourism Parks Board and South African Tourism.
“We would like to thank all the local and global sponsors. Without them, this would not have been possible,” added Mrs. Heymans.
