Blood for Christmas
South African National Blood Service (SANBS) reported that there
is less than 2 days group O blood stock available in the country
with the hardest hit area being KwaZulu-Natal with only 1 day's
stock.
Group O is the universal blood type which means it can be safely
transfused to patients of any blood type. For this reason it is
used in trauma cases and held in emergency fridges in the rural
areas.
“At this time of the year schools are closing and many
businesses are also preparing for mid December closing limiting
the clinics that SANBS can hold” said Ravi Reddy, COO of SANBS.
SANBS is appealing to blood donors, particularly group O donors,
to donate blood at their closest blood donor centre.
Any businesses or communities that are prepared to host a blood
drive are also asked to contact SANBS.
