Sluice gates opened at Vaal Dam

Fourteen sluice gates at the Vaal Dam were opened on Thursday 28 January - the highest number of gates open at once since 1996.
Three million litres of water fled into the Vaal Dam per second and two million pour out. Incessant rains pushed the water levels above the 100% full mark, forcing officials from South Africa's Department of Water Affairs to release some of the water.
Releasing water led to flooding in surrounding areas. A few residents near the Vaal River experienced damage to their homes.
