Yawa vows to root out corruption involving learners and driving licenses

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa says that 73 applicants have until tomorrow (Friday, 5 March 2010) to respond to allegations that learners licenses in their possession were fraudulently issued last year at the Rustenburg Driving License Testing Centre (DTLC).

The license scam involving a cashier employed by Rustenburg Local Municipality was discovered by the Management representative of the centre in August 2009.
The investigation into the alleged scam was concluded by the provincial inspectorate in December.

Failure by the applicants to respond to letters written to them by the provincial department will automatically cancel their learners and driving licenses obtained thereafter.

As part of its intensified effort to root out corruption relating to fraudulent issuing of learners and driving licenses, MEC Yawa's department has recently suspended six examiners at Koster (1), Hartbeesfontein (1), Carletonville(2) and Fochville(2) DTLC's.

Two of the officials suspended as examiners are employed by Merafong Local Municipality as management representatives.

“We'll spare no effort to root out corrupt elements in order to safeguard the integrity of our licensing system,” vows Yawa.

ACCESS TO HOUSING IS A DEMOCRATIC AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT - MEC DESBO MOHONO

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, said that International Women's Day is the right moment to assess the extent of success registered by the democratic government in its efforts to expand access to quality housing to the women of the country.

Mohono reminded all South Africans that access to housing is a democratic and constitutional right for all citizens, including women. She said her department is responsible for ensuring the progressive realization of this right, and will not rest until this right becomes a reality to all women of the North West.

She challenged all women to participate actively in the housing delivery programmes of government and to monitor the quality of houses that are being constructed in their communities. She added that women should take the responsibility of ensuring women's access to decent and quality housing.

The department is using this year's International Women's Day to reaffirm its commitment to the right of all women to access housing and to avail opportunities for emerging women contractors.
