Dairy trade links between North West province (SA) and Botswana
intensifies
Mahikeng: Efforts aimed at sustaining the economic bilateral and
trade links that were established between Botswana and South Africa
regarding dairy farming, recently saw the visit by a delegation from
the North West province which attended a Dairy industry workshop in
Palapye, in Botswana's Central District.
This comes in the wake of a visit to North West province by the
Botswana counterparts last year, to further uphold the memorandum of
understanding (MOU) and a cross border initiative between the two
countries which led to the establishment of a “Cross Border Dairy
Farming Initiative”.
The North West delegation comprised of the Department of
Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Rural Development
officials, representatives from the North West African Chamber of
Commerce (NWACC) and four local dairy farmers from Ngaka Modiri
Molema District.
The team was welcomed by South Africa's Acting High Commissioner in
Botswana, Her Excellency Ms. Caroline Malema.
The workshop was attended by amongst others, experts in dairy
farming ranging from breeders, milk production, transport as well as
branding and marketing.
Speaking during the workshop, Dr. Pontsho Mokaila Chief Director,
Agricultural Support Services within the DACERD said following the
Botswana dairy farmers and officials' visit to South Africa last
year, “the Department managed to hit the ground running by exploring
means of strengthening this cross border initiative between the two
countries”, confirmed Dr Mokaila.
He said attending such information sharing workshop and bringing
dairy experts and investors of the two countries together, formed
part of the departmental strategy towards sustaining relations
between the two countries.
According to Dr. Howard Sigwele of Delta Dairies, who organized the
workshop, Botswana is in high demand of raw milk estimated at five
million litres per month of which Batswana local farmers cannot meet
at the moment.
In earnest, Botswana imports 80% of raw milk supply from South
Africa and the North West province contributes only 20% to the bulk.
The province's intention is to increase its supply rate and as Dr.
Mokaila suggests, such a move would mean less transports costs for
Botswana buyers due to the close proximity of Botswana to North West
Province.
He further said the department would continue to attract potential
agricultural investors in South Africa, on behalf of Botswana.
Dr Poncho Mokaila confirmed that already, one of the local farmers
intends to invest a further 250 dairy cattle in Botswana, signalling
positive prospects for this trade initiative.
Mr. Moss Moruakgomo a dairy farmer from Ramatlabama who was part of
the SA delegation to Botswana, firmly believes that the visit
exposed them to market opportunities in Botswana and paved
prospective trade opportunities for small-scale dairy farmers in
South Africa.
He emphasized that with the assistance from the Department, they
would be able to take advantage of the market opportunities
available in Botswana.
MEC Boitumelo Tshwene asserts that the department would continue to
create broad platforms for all role players in the agricultural
sector in order to assist and further enhance the dairy production
industry in Botswana of which South Africa's economy stands to
benefit as well.

“Laugh a little, give a
little”
On Friday, 3 September 2010 we will be celebrating Casual Day.
Allowing each and every South African to “Dress for laughs”. This
fun filled day provides you with the opportunity to show the world
that you care about persons with disabilities for a donation of only
R10.
Casual Day is the biggest fundraising and awareness creating project
for persons with disabilities in South Africa. Every year on the
first Friday of September we ask people to dress differently than
they normally would, and to wear the official Casual Day sticker to
show their support.
The following National Welfare Organisations are beneficiaries of
Casual Day:
- The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA
(NCPPDSA)
- SA Federation for Mental Health
- Disabled People South Africa (DPSA)
- Deaf Federation of SA (DEAFSA)
- Epilepsy SA
- SA National Council for the Blind
These organisations represent about 400 different schools, homes and
workshops for persons with disabilities. Every year more than 200
local welfare organisations participate in this project and raise
funds for their own needs via the infrastructure of the project.
This year Casual Day encourages people to dress for laughs. Wear
something funny, fancy or utterly ridiculous with your Casual Day
sticker and join in on the fun. Laughter is infectious. The sound of
roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or
sneeze.
When laughter is shared, it binds people together. So, celebrate
life and be grateful for what you have by showing your support for
persons with disabilities by wearing your Casual Day sticker on
Friday, 3 September.
Show your support for persons with disabilities by donating only R10
for an official Casual Day sticker.
Your R10 donation really goes a long way, so come on, join the fun
by wearing something utterly ridiculous with your Casual Day sticker
and show your support for persons with disabilities.
The recipe to participate is as easy as this:
Convince your boss and colleagues to participate and collect R10
from everyone.
Obtain your Casual Day sticker at a participating welfare
organisation (listed on our website), any Absa Bank, any outlet of
Game stores, Jet, Edgars, Boardmans, CNA or order online at
