City to host global investors conference

The Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, China Dodovu, addressed members of the Fourth Estate during a briefing on the International Investors Conference held at Protea Hotel on Tuesday 19 August. The conference will be held from 22-24 September and other stakeholders include the Industrial Development Corp., Sky Media, FNB.

ESKOM SCIENCE EXPO ENERGISING YOUNG MINDS

The regional finals for the Eskom Young Science Expo will be held on Friday 22 August 2008 at the NW University, Potchefstroom Campus next to Karlien in the "examination hall".   The 2008 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists promises to deliver a more exciting expo and exceed all expectations. A total of 153 science projects will be displayed and evaluated by various judges.  Teachers from different schools are grouped with Eskom and university specialists to cross-pollinate their observations and ensure that their combined knowledge is filtered through to schools within different areas.   In light of the current energy challenge facing South Africa, Eskom Expo for Young Scientists have broadened their focus to include projects that reflect learners being more conscious of their energy consumption and therefore becoming more efficient in the use thereof.  The Expo affords learners the unique opportunity of showcasing their innovation and ingenuity through projects focused in the fields of Maths, Science and Technology. Awards will be given for the best Eskom female-, energy and developmental projects.  Special awards will also be presented for the best primary and secondary school entrees.

The twenty overall regional winners to be selected will represent the region in Pretoria at the National Science Expo to be held from 2-4 October 2008 at Pretoria University.

Eskom believes that the fundamental cornerstone of growth and success is not only driven by new installations and higher levels of investment, but by people. Therefore at the National Eskom Science Expo, Eskom will identify senior learners with the aim to design a career path for each learner linked to a sponsorship worth approximately R250 000 per learner.

Eskom want to be involved in every step of the skills development value chain; in recruiting, developing and training our bright youth from primary to secondary and extending to the highest levels of tertiary education.

Your Profile:
Name: Koos Peters

Star Sign: Sagitarian

Birthday: 22nd December 1940

Occupation: Retired Medical Technologist

When I look into the mirror every morning I think: You have to decide to love today

My favourite people in the world are: Those who love themselves and make others happy.

My favourite quote is: Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone

Not easily, but good proper humour……..makes me laugh.

The greatest lesson life has taught me so far is: If something is worth doing; it is worth doing it well.

I’ll do almost anything for: My family and friends – especially my grand children

When I get stressed I am most likely to throw nothing out a window, but I will go outside and handle my feeling

I want my tombstone to read: He has loved unconditionally.

I wouldn’t mind being stuck in an elevator with: anyone who can remain calm.

In three words I am: easy to live with.

If I had a million rand to spare I would definitely go on a luxury world cruise, if I can convince my wife that you get over sea sickness

I live in Klerksdorp because I have received so much in the 34 years that I have been here.

The first thing I would save from a house fire is my loved ones if they are trapped inside, anything else are replaceable.

My nickname is: Koos

I love my job because now retired, but in my profession I could really put service above self.

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

Does the Right to Strike mean the right to litter our city?

I was appalled by the recent littering of our city, by striking municipal workers.  The right to strike is a recognized action by aggrieved workers.  Even the Constitution of our Country recognizes the right to strike.  In June 2005 Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana said, 'Government recognizes the right of workers to strike . . .'

Employers and labour have always been strange bedfellows.  In love at times.  At odds most of the time.  Like faultlines in subterranean tectonic plates, always ready to move against each other.

Such are the affairs of men in society.  Never as clear and neat as a mathematical formula that gives an exact result.  It's always been like that.  Always will be.

If you think about it, how else do workers legitimately express their collective dissatisfaction other than through strike action?  The flip side of the same coin, how employers express their displeasure other than through lock-out?  It's a two-way street that requires that both parties come to the negotiating table and thrash out an arrangement.  I believe this to be the right way to sort things out.  Growing up under the previous regime you had things thrashed out for you, with or without your consent.

Getting back to the recent strike in our City, I decided to do some reading up on the matter.  While the principle of the right to strike is enshrined in both our Constitution and through the offices of the International Labour Organization, nowhere can I read up about the right to litter.

So, having limited knowledge of the law, I would imagine that littering would be illegal (sic!).

Sure, march down the main street with placards and chant.  But why litter the area around our City Hall?  To amplify your grievances?  I for one was not impressed.  And please don't tell me that it was 'one or two unruly elements within the movement'.  Judging by the amount of litter, this was orchestrated on a wider basis.

I was under the impression that organized labour conducted itself in a dignified and befitting manner.  If what recently happened on the streets of Klerksdorp was dignified, I would hate to know what 'undignified' would have resulted in.

Given the past and what happened previously in this country, is it not time that we move to a more mature political environment?  An environment in which we send out a message, not only to the rest of the world, but to ourselves as well, in which we say we have collectively risen above our sordid past.

Coming home (on the Monday the strike started) that afternoon, it was with a sense of shame.  Thoughts of, 'Is this where I want to spend the rest of my life?'  And, 'Is this the right 90th birthday gift for Madiba'

I know strike action can get rough and heated.  But it does not have to get dirty?

Chat again next week.

Kaleidoscope a Winner!

“And now the end is near and so we face our final curtain” was an apt ending to Saturday 16th August Dancing Kaleidoscope. Months of hard work were ended with a celebration of the life of Elvis with his “Love me tender” danced as the last item. The Escapades Theatre was all a vibe as the best of the best dancers entertained the audience with variations of ensembles above any ones expectations. Even the youngest participant excelled, with her courage to perform on such a frightening platform. Thus closing the chapter of the Rio-Matlosana Youth Dance Festival and its winner's participation for 2008.

The proceeds of this production are to assist with the payment of the “Skouspel” Bus for the Evanna Care Centre in Hartbeesfontein.

The Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) Zone VI Under 20 Youth Games postponed

The Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) Zone VI Under 20 Youth Games that were scheduled for 7 to 17 October 2008, have now been postponed to 3  12 December 2008. The Games will still be hosted by the Tlokwe Municipality (Potchefstroom / Ikageng).

The postponement follows a request from Member States, who felt that participation in the Zone VI Games will unable them to send full strength teams to the Commonwealth Youth Games that are taking place during the same period.

The other concern was that in some of the Zone's Member States, the current dates clash with final examinations for youths in the under 20 age bracket and in others, they clash with school contact time which is crucial for those preparing for end of year school leaving final examinations (Matric; “O” Levels; “A” Levels; and others).

Informing the Local Organising Committee for the Games about this postponement, the LOC Chairperson, Mr Gert Oosthuizen, who is also Deputy Minister for Sport & Recreation in South Africa, said that “although we considered the issue of school examinations and contact time when we came up with the original dates, the information at our disposal at the time, was not sufficient for us to choose any other date. On the positive side, we will instead of using two Athletes' Villages, now use only one as schools shall be closed, making the university hostels in Potchefstroom available”.

The new dates including the opening & closing ceremonies are as follows:

01 December 2008  The Games Village Opens; 03 December 2008  Games Opening Ceremony

12 December 2008  Closing Ceremony and 13 December 2008  The Games Village closes and teams depart.

North West Honours Young Afrikaner Woman

21 year old Monique Erasmus became the pride of the North West Province as she received the Young Woman Contributing towards Development Award from Premier Edna Molewa.

She received the prestigious award at the Opening Ceremony for the 6th Women in Provincial and Local Government Summit that commenced at Rustenburg Civic Centre. The young Afrikaner woman passionately runs "My Home", a home which caters for the abandoned, HIV infected and disabled children in Rustenburg.

In recognition of her role in the struggle for liberation, 91 year old Sina Tsibogo of Dinokana received the Provincial Woman Veteran Award. The bedridden veteran popularly known as Madithobane played a pivotal role in ensuring safe passage of many liberation struggle leaders into exile through the Botswana border.

In encouraging women to emulate the work of the two women, Premier Molewa said, "We have to affirm the infinite possibilities that exist for women to be strong, to push the boundaries and to redefine the landscape of gender relations in our country.  To do that we have to appreciate women's nation-building place in our society and give recognition and increased visibility to them in our sector - these women who continue a tradition of mothers and grandmothers in building African communities - strong women" said the Premier.
