Chamber hits the mark

The seminar “Women in Construction”, presented by the Wesvaal Chamber of Business and the fledgling  Matlosana Youth Chamber on 19 August, was a resounding success, having been oversubscribed by over 30% and even attracting attendees from Mafikeng and Ventersdorp

Under the able direction of Councillor Mumsy Lee (MMC LED & Tourism, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality), attendees were briefed on the implications of starting one's own business and the BBBEE scorecard.

This was followed by presentations on the purpose, services and procedures of the HSBRC.

The realities that women face in the industry were highlighted and in a lighter vein, Dr Lizelda Goslin provided some pertinent background and advice on how women can manage business and personal relationships to their advantage.

Finally, Ms Jean Sekonyela shared her experiences from the perspective of someone who “has been there” and still is.

Feedback from attendees was very positive, with almost a cry of: “give us more”, which the organizers fully intend to do.

This event was the first in a series and the launch of an initiative to provide a support environment for emerging business.

Anybody interested in the concept and future events, is encouraged to call 018 462 7109 with their details.

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

Last Friday, Rob, the philosopher of the Sopranos thought that we should go fishing on Sunday.  I said sure and suggested that we make contact then.

Sunday dawned, there was a radiance to it that spoke of a new spring.  There is a certain vitality to spring.  Flowers start budding and the fawn of winter is succeeded by a resplendence of colour.

I went for a long walk stopping at Alan Coleman's and Torben Pedersen's to see how there were.  They weren't in.  Pity, they make great tea and can chat just as well.

Eventually I got home; showered breakfasted and settled down to tie some flies.  So much better than cleaning the pool and a lot more relaxing too.

With REM in the background, I started experimenting on some new caddis nymphs and adults.

The next thing Rob's at my gate wanting to pick me up.  It was about eleven o'clock and I had clean forgotten about the fishing.  Tying flies and listening to REM does let one drift off a bit.  'Hey Rob, its too early, the fish will only be on the bite later this afternoon.'   'No, No Collie, I can feel it in the air, the fish are just waiting for us'  'Yeah sure Rob.'  Truth is, I had forgotten about the trip and I had not packed.  'Rob, you guys go on ahead, I'll be along later.  But please sms me if any of your catch anything.'  'What you talking Collie, we will send you a photo!'  'Yeah sure Rob'.  There was a certain electricity about it all.  There they sat all three of them, Rob, Mario the bouncer and Dave, a newcomer to the Sopranos.  He is so tall, I think I will name him the long one.

Anyhow, there they sat in Rob's 4x4 grinning like kids at a birthday party;  and off they went to Trevor Lee's Farm.

In the interim.  I made arrangements with blank javelin Joubert to pick me up around one o'clock.

I finished the batch of flies I was busy with and packed my gear.  Joubie picked me up in the JEEP.  'Funny thing, Joubie, I haven't heard a thing from the Sopranos'.  'Collie', in that gravelly voice of his, 'Maybe they are catching so much, that they forgot to contact you.' 'Yeah sure Joubie'.

We get to the river.  There's that familiar silence to the place.  Not the usual cacophony, like roosters at mating time.  I wander down to the water's edge.  And sure enough there they are.  No, they weren't excited to see us.  The body language said it all  after 2 hours, nothing.  But being the personable type that I am I tried to evoke some response by gesticulating with my outstretched arms.  Nothing.  It was as if they, were practicing for a funeral dirge.  'Joubie, I am going to have to lift their spirits up a bit.'  I read the water (I am an old reader of the water), studied the insects and waded to the general area where I thought the fish would be and sure enough, about ten minutes later I landed my first fish.  A mudfish no less with my predictable 'come to papa' signature reverberating down the river.  A few minutes later I netted a 5kg smallmouth yellowfish.  All in all I must have caught around 8 fish by the time I decided to call it a day.

With a dying sun at my back I made my way back to the vehicle.  I was thankful that the fish were back and in good nick and always ready to put up a good fight.  The interminable cycle has begun again.

Ever wondered about heaven on earth  the Vaal is heaven on earth.

If only the Sopranos had listened to me, and had gone out later.  Pity.

Chat again next week.
