IKAGENG HOUSING PROJECT LAUNCHED

Dust flew at the Project launch Site in Ikageng Extension 11 near Potchefstroom as jubilant residents toyi-toyied and appreciated the face-bricked showhouse that North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa handed to beneficiaries at the weekend. MEC Yawa and the Executive Mayor for Tlokwe City Council, Councillor Maphehle Maphehle used the occasion to also turn the sod for the commencement of construction of 2000 low-cost units by two women developers in the area. At an information session for women contractors held earlier at the Madiba Banquet Hall,Yawa announced that his department in partnership with the National Home Builders' Registration Council has earmarked housing construction capacity building training for 50 Women contractors and youth in the current financial year.”We wish to see women contractors take the challenge of housing delivery with the same resilience, determination and courage as the heroines who marched to the union buildings on the 09 August 1956.

The programme for women empowerment should translate into accelerated delivery in the spirit of business unusual and not delayed and unfinished projects", Yawa said.

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

The Truth and Ethics

The word ethics is derived from the Greek word ethos meaning custom.  Taken further, ethics investigates the effects of human actions on society.  At once the reader will recognize that ethics concerns itself with what is acceptable to society and what is not.  A simple example will be that society demands that we wear clothing in public and that to walk around naked is not allowed.  Custom dictates that we don't walk around naked in public.  And that custom is codified into our legal system.

Ethics as a philosophical concept is vast.  At best this article will only skim the surface.  And even then it will be left wanting.  The topic has vexed the world's greatest thinkers from Socrates to the present.

The philosopher that I want to focus on for this article is Immanuel Kant.  Kant was part of a school of philosophers from a period known as The Enlightenment.  It is so named to differentiate it from the so-called Dark Ages and concentrated on man's ability to reason and to think freely.  During the Dark Ages man could definitely not think freely.  The Enlightenment had some serious moments  like the French Revolution where the masses came to rationalize that the King of France was a servant of the people and not the other way round.  It was also to provide the platform for the birth of Modernism and the advent of steam and speed.

Kant was Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of Konigsberg.  He is noted for his development of what is known as moral philosophy.  His famous (and very thought-provoking) saying is:  'Two things fill the mind with ever-increasing wonder and awe . . . the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.'  Morality here (a branch of ethics) concerns itself with the principles of right and wrong.  The so-called Moral Imperative.  Kant espouses that we do our moral duty, which reason alone can establish.  According to Kant what matters about an action, in so for as its moral worth is concerned, is the intention with which it is performed.

But what is the right intention, asks Kant, and how can we determine what that is?  Kant argues that reason alone can determine what the right intention is.  To assist us, according to Kant, we are guided by one or more principles or maxims.  Kant goes on to explain his position through moral imperatives.  Don't steal, period.  It's not, if you don't want to go to jail, don't steal.  Or don't lie.  Not, if you want people to trust you, don't lie.  Don't commit adultery.  It's not, if you don't want to get caught out, don't commit adultery.   Sound like the Old Testament?

While Kant's theory did come in for criticism ie. no regard for people's feelings, I do feel that he did get rid of the grey areas in some of the arguments that we tend to get caught up in.  You know exactly where you stand on a particular matter.  Either a person stole or he didn't.  Lied or didn't lie.  Had an affair or didn't.  It's that simple.

The truth is not a thing that we invented.  It's within us.  All of us, as rational thinking beings, are by and large aware of our transgressions.

Maybe in summing up, I would, like to quote from Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat.  Khayyam was a famous 10th century Arabian poet.  In the 71st quatrain he writes:

'The Moving Finger [of life] writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.'
Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

Chat again next week.

Dr Kenneth Kaunda Women Seminar

The office of the Speaker organized to pay homage to women Councillors and Officials in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality and Maquassi Hills Local Municipality. The event was held on 28 August 2008 at the Portuguese Hall in Klerksdorp, a mere three days before we conclude the National Women's Month.

The prestigious event was aimed at acknowledging the massive sacrifices and overwhelming contributions made by women in our municipality.

Women were celebrating with songs of joy and speakers of the day were empowering the audiences.  The women received gifts and there was a lucky draw during this prestigious event.

The following statement was stated by the Executive Mayor of  Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, “When the multitudes of women, young and old, rich and poor from across the cultural divide gathered at Ga-Motlatla some three weeks ago for our National Women's Day Celebration, we as women of this Province felt humbled by the honour bestowed on us, especially the rural women in the North West by that symbolic gesture.”

She went on to state that that as part of the broader government system, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality has taken several steps in affirming the leadership of women in both the administrative arm and its political component.  Women officials from the lady who makes tea and sweeps the floor right up to the managerial echelons, comprise the most important and essential element of our machinery for quality service delivery.

She ended of to say, “Undeniably, the road ahead is still steep, rocky and full of thorns.

The achievement of further advances at a workplace level should clearly dovetail with the broader national agenda to finally catapult South Africa and our District into a socially inclusive and a cohesive nation.”

Agreement with Korean university strengthened

A delegation of the Kosin University in South Korea, under leadership of the vice-president of this institution, visited the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. A collaboration agreement with this university was strengthened further and it entails exchanging students and lecturers, especially in theology and education sciences. From the left is Mr Koan Su Park of the Korean church in Pretoria, Prof Annette Combrink, rector of the Potchefstroom Campus, Mr Min Ahn, vice-president of Kosin University, and his wife, Jin-Hee Chung. At the back is Kyu-Tae Choi, a Puk student who did the interpreting and can speak Afrikaans practically fluently.

Markdag - Janie Schneiderskool

Electricity prices set to go up

Rising energy costs are here to stay, and consumers will have to live with them, says Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin.

Speaking at a business breakfast in Cape Town on Tuesday, he warned that while consumers had started to cut back energy consumption, more needed to be done to prevent a repeat of the power outages experienced earlier in 2008.

Eskom plans to spend R343-billion over the next five years to build new power stations and revive power plants.

Erwin said those plans were on track, but that that would not spare consumers the burden of paying for rising commodity prices. "The price of energy is inescapably rising. It's rising and will continue to do so for a long time," he told the meeting. "The cost of energy to the consumer has to be cost reflective," he said.

Eskom said in July that primary energy costs, which include major power sources like coal, had risen by 40 percent in the last financial year.

"We will have to double the basic wholesale price of electricity over the next two to three years," he said.Erwin, who has come in for flak for his handling of the power crisis, said part of the solution lay in greater energy efficiency. Overall electricity consumption had fallen by 4 percent to 5 percent. – iol

Petrol price to dip under R10

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief as the petrol price dropped 78 cents to R9.42 a litre on 3 September 2008.

The drop in fuel prices has been attributed to lower international oil prices, coupled with a stronger rand. Last month the petrol price dropped by 27 cents, but the price at the pump reflected a drop of only 20 cents per litre.

This caused an outcry among motorists who felt cheated, but the problem was blamed on the fact that the figure had to be rounded off to accommodate fuel pumps that could not display a four-digit unit price per litre.

The "rounding off" system had been applied to accommodate 30 percent of pumps in the country which could not accommodate four digits, but this time it was not required, as all pumps could accommodate three digit figures, said Peter Morgan, chief executive of the Fuel Retailers' Association.

Hein Baak, deputy director in the department of minerals and energy, said it could not be predicted whether the price would continue to drop, as the evaluation of factors affecting prices were carried out monthly. – iol

SIX FACTORS TO A HEALTHY HEART

September is declared National Heart Awareness Month.  Health professionals and health promoters of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda give health talks to local people and the communities visiting our clinics and hospitals.  “Business Unusual, All hands on deck for Healthy Life styles”.

The secret to long life and good health is practicing Healthy Life Styles.  Make the lifestyle changes necessary to promote good health in the future”

The human heart can be compared to the engine of a car  both are power units that keep bodies moving or alive. Your heart works as a pump that pushes blood to the organs, tissues, and cells of your body.  The blood pumped by the heart delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell and removes the carbon dioxide and waste products made by those cells.  If blood flow to the heart is slowed or stopped or the heart beats irregularly, your life may be in danger.  Like your car engine, how you treat your heart will determine how long and how and how well it will continue to work for you.

Many people take better care of their cars than their bodies, says Dr Denton A. Cooley, founder, president- emeritus and surgeon-in-chief of the Texas Heart Institute.  They are careful to change the oil, have regular service and use proper petrol for their vehicle make.  But when it comes to their bodies, they fuel it with high-fat and high-salt meals, they smoke, and they don't exercise routinely.  Medical advances can't do away with heart disease.  Good health depends largely on people taking positive action.” Healthy life Style is important for meaningful good healthy life.

Exercise Regularly
Exercise 30 minutes at least three times in a week with a moderate-intensity activity (e.g. brisk walk) and 60-90 minutes daily for weight control.

(Check with your healthcare professional before starting any exercise program).

Aim for at least 30 minutes a day or two 15-minutes periods of exercise.
Maximize health benefits by making exercise a part of you daily routine.
Do warms-up and cool-down exercises to help prevent muscle injury.

Eat Sensibly
Eat a variety of foods in moderation and follow pyramid for portion size.
Use the Nutrition Facts Label as a aid for health choices.

Limit total fat.  Limit saturated fat.  Avoid hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils known as trans-fat (read the ingredients section).

Replace unhealthy fats with healthy monounsaturated fats like olive, canola and peanuts oils.

Eat at least two fish meals a week. Cold water fish contain health omega-3 oils.
Drink 4-6 glasses of water a day.
Maintain a healthy weight. Don't crash diet.
Manage Stress

Stress is a normal part of life how you deal with it can have an affect on your heart.

Schedule “me” time to do the things that give you pleasure.
Devote an hour a day to relaxing.  Take a walk, do yoga stretches.  Try needlepoint or any activity that promote relaxation.
Practice meditation to help control reactions to stress.
Get a good night's sleep.
Allow others to help with daily chores.
Control High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure often has no symptoms  that's why it's called The Silent Killer.
Take medication exactly as prescribed.

Optimal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg.  Drug therapy is indicated when blood pressure is >140/90 mm Hg, or even lower blood pressure in the setting of chronic kidney disease or diabetes (>130/90 mm Hg) A blood pressure reading of 135/85 or above is considered high.

Monitor high blood pressure regularly.  Ask you doctor about blood pressure self-monitoring

Be aware of Risk Factors for High Blood Pressure:

Heredity, Race (twice as frequent in African than Whites), Obesity (2-6 times more likely to develop

Age (risk goes up as you get older), Salt Intake (limit if salt-sensitive), Excess Alcoho Intake, Lack of Exercise Stress.

Avoid Potential Problems
Don't Smoke
Control Diabetic blood sugars.
Avoid drug that contribute to heart rhythm disturbances

Reduce risk of drug interactions by letting all of your doctors know about every medicine you are taking  even over- the counter medicines, vitamins herbals and birth control pills.

Red wine and other alcohol beverages may help reduce the risk of heart disease, but, if you don't drink, don't start.  Women should limit alcohol intake to one drink per day.  Alcohol is an additive drug and excess alcohol consumption is a risk factor for heart disease and other diseases and contributes to domestic violence and automobile fatalities.  Purple grape juice may offer the same health benefit for arteries without the concerns of alcohol.

Have Healthy Relationships

Intimacy, trust and feeling supported are ingredients of healthy relationships.  Share your feeling with a trusted loved one.  Learn to communicate effectively to get what you need.  Seek counseling or support groups if you have difficulty relating to others.

Be clear when reporting health concerns to your medical practitioner.  Organize your information before you visit to the doctor or practitioner's office.

Students empower teens in Sonderwater

Honours students in development communication distinguished themselves in the community the past week in a very special way.

The five students, Kristel Fourie, Yolanda Maartens, Jeanne Oliver, Amoré Truter en Madge Lourens became involved in the GIRRL project (Girls in risk reduction leadership) of Ms Kylah Forbes Biggs, a research fellow at the Africa Centre for Risk Studies, under the leadership of Dr Dewald van Niekerk.

GIRRL is financed by the World Bank and was recently included in the United Nations' international strategic programme for risk reduction.

The students acted as volunteers and according to Biggs they did far more that was expected of them. “In this way theory and practice communicated with each other.”

The GIRLL project empowered 21 teenage girls in the Sonderwater community by presenting practical information and application sessions. Themes such as HIV/Aids, sexual health and first aid received attention so that these girls could help the community. The local government, experts and lecturers were also called in to present the sessions.

According to Biggs, the sessions gave more than mere information. It built self-confidence and empowered the girls to make more effective and informed decisions.Recently the group held a community day in Ikageng and the girls conveyed their new knowledge to their community by means of drama performances.

Biggs says they would like to present the project in other communities as well.

This project also recently appeared in a UN publication.
For more information, contact Biggs at 018 299 1620.
