THE INAUGURAL GLOBAL INVESTORS CONFERENCE

The inaugural Global Investors Conference and Exhibition will commence on

22 to 24 September 2008. The conference will be hosted by the City of People, namely, Matlosana (Kerksdorp).

The main aims and objectives of the conference is to market the City of Matlosana and the North West Province as a premium business destination; increase competitiveness and innovation in key sectors within all industries of the economy: and facilitate economic empowerment opportunites. The conference will highlight opportunities to partner with the City of Matlosana, the North West Province and its business community in developing its economy in terms of property, infrastructure, trade and investment. This is an historic event that will undoubtedly leave behind a legacy of sky-scraping opportunities and investment prospects far beyond expectation. This initiative has not only worked, but has brought about amazing results on international level. Thus, it is bound to take the lead and reach the target mark of combating poverty, unemployment and unfavourable economic conditions. “This is a season of advancement, a sequel to be remembered, a vision being realised before our very own eyes,” says Muhammed Dawood, CEO, SkyMED!A. This conference will definitely initiate national investment, innovation and development. It is the key to a vast variety of doors that are just waiting to be unlocked. South Africa has had many challenges in the past, the most prominent bieng overcoming discrimination and living below our privileges. Now is the time to act. Now is the time to take hold of empowerment with both hands, to act at the spur of the moment, to take the final step that will on day be regarded as a leap in the footprints of economic history. This is exactly what the Global Investors Conference is, an opportunity of a lifetime.

This initiative is an exciting venture into the crux of prosperity, creating jobs, procuring business and, most important of all, enhancing the lifestyle of our communities and eventually,  touching the lives of every South African.Renowned speakers that will be attending the conference, namely: the premier of the North West Province, the Honourable Edna Molewa; Job Mokgoro the MD of ECI Africa; German brand guru Dr Nikolaus Eberl; Vuyo Mbuli and Lee-Anne Manas, Morning Live presenters  will be MCs (Masters of Ceremonies); the dti (Department of Trade and Industry); and Eskom  just to name a few. This is an event not to be missed…

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

To lead . . . you have to be led

'And when we think we lead, we are most led'  Lord Byron.

Last Saturday, it fell to Dr Noel Shamley to do the teaching at our informal men's fellowship group.  Noel chose leadership.  When Noel prepares a teaching, I tend to pay more attention, as he always presents an angle that I have not thought of.  Something out of the blue.  Afrikaners say if best:  'Hy vang jou op die steelkant'.

The essence of Noel's talk centered on pater familias  the father as head of the family.  When it comes to leadership that is probably the best place to start.  To be effective, the family as a unit, like any grouping or organization, needs leadership.  Even in the animal kingdom there are usually structures where the so-called alpha male or female dominates.  When it comes to pater familias, I gleaned the following (not everything, and my paraphrasing) from Noel, regarding the characteristics of leadership.

First and foremost is leadership by example.  Children get formal education at school and they get their value education at home.  What sort of message is being sent to a kid where the father tells him or her, not to drink, and then comes home legless each evening and beats the hell out of everyone?  This is the foundation from which all other leadership attributes flow.

Trust is fundamental as well.  What can be said of a father who casually mentions at the dinner table how he screwed the petrol attendant by underpaying him for a petrol purchase?

It's so easy to blame others (we all do it).  Being accountable for one's own actions encourages others to be accountable for theirs.  It's okay to make mistakes.  You can learn from them.

All too often, a father getting home in the evening (no doubt tired and jaded) does not feel like listening to his kid's point of view on why he got a bad mark for his maths test, responds, 'I don't want to hear any of your crap.  Get to your room, I'll deal with you later.'  Leadership is a two-way street.  Give and take.   Sacrifice and empathy.

Not all kids in a family have the same aptitude.  A father needs to recognize this and show tolerance towards these differences.  Because your kid bats at number eleven does not mean that you should not go along to his cricket matches.  He needs your support and your acknowledgement for his contribution toward the team effort.  Somebody has to bat at number eleven.  It's not the end of the world.

What about considering alternative points of view.  Kids are quite savvy and this ability needs to be taken into account.  What's wrong with the whole family giving an input as to where the annual holiday is going to be.  'Oh no Dad, not Margate again!'  'Yes, and that's final.  Any backchat and I'll give you a clout'.  And don't for a minute think that the kids don't know that the only reason that it's Margate again, is because that is where the boss holiday's as well.

Quite by chance I also happened to be finishing a book:  'Goodbye Dolly Gray - The story of the Boer War'  by Rayne Kruger.  While in no way detracting from the other great leaders on both sides such as De Wet and Botha and Methuen and Kitchener;  Kruger does make special mention of Koos De La Rey - The Lion of the Western Transvaal.  Arguably De La Rey was the greatest natural soldier that South Africa has yet produced.  His contribution to the Boer War is legendary and well documented.  However a few outstanding events were to distinguish this fighting general as a great leader of men.

He, despite the protestations of Gen. Cronje, managed to convince Pres. M.T. Steyn (O.F.S.) that the use of trenches would prove to be the undoing of the British at Magersfontein.  De La Rey was shown to be right and to further demoralize the British in what came to be known as Black Week.  Kruger describes De La Rey as [one with]:  'Boldness and wariness, shrewdness and generosity, gentleness and tenacity, passion and reflectiveness, [which] seem to combine in a knightly figure more Arthurian than the Biblical patriarch . . .'

Make no doubt about it, the scorched earth policy advocated by Kitchener left bitter feelings.  So much so that many villagers in the Western Transvaal refused to bury British dead in their cemeteries.  Yet De La Rey showed great magnanimity in issuing strict instruction that any British dead were to be buried in the local cemetery at Lichtenburg, with full respect.

Again, at The Battle of Tweebosch on 7 March 1902, De La Rey outsmarted Lord Methuen.  During this battle, one of the last of the war, Methuen was wounded and captured.  Many of De La Rey's soldiers argued that so rich a prize should be exchanged for a captured Boer general of at least equal rank.  He would have none of it and made arrangements for Methuen's transport to the nearest British hospital.  He [De La Rey] also sent a telegram to Lady Methuen expressing his concern for her husband's wounds.

And then during the negotiations at Vereeniging during May 1902, De La Rey sat quietly without uttering a word.  He, unlike the other generals was not a beaten man.  He could continue the war.  Instead, he listened to the woeful reports of the parlous conditions in other parts of the Boer Republics.  At last he spoke.  In soft measured tones he cast his vote for peace, because, 'It is not a question of fighting to the bitter end.  The bitter end has come and the chance to negotiate might never recur'.  To continue the war, in his opinion, would only exacerbate the already sorry state of his people.  The talent required to know when to fight and when to negotiate is rare.  Only a few possess it.  De La Rey was one with such talent.

Was this great man, this unschooled soldier, and leader, not a servant of his people?  A person who puts the needs of others before his?

Chat again next week.

Feeste by Janie Schneider se markdag

Make friends before you raise funds

Friend-raising comes before fundraising. This is what the newly elected house committee of the Lavaria ladies residence of the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU) learnt on 6 September  when Ms Maria Mopelong, NWU Senior Manager: Institutional Advancement and Business Development addressed them on fundraising during their weekend camp at Wawielpark near Stilfontein.

“It is very important to build good relationships with your donours. One way of doing this is by acknowledging your donours' contributions. Send them thank-you notes, birthday cards, invitations to your functions, and information about your activities,” Ms Mopelong says.

“Make sure that you have a complete database of potential donours. Then write a good prososal, accompanied by a cover letter,” she advises.

The following information should be included in a proposal: how much money was received already and how it was spent, information about your institution and its activities, a link to its website, the impact that fundraising activities had on the institution so far and how much money is still needed and for what purpose.

“Believe it or not, but many individuals and companies are actually keen to make donations. Look for their invitations for fundraising proposals on the internet,” she says.

She believes that it is very important to target the right people or companies, for instance foundations, trusts government departments and embassies. Once again, the internet can be used for this purpose.

“Collect adequate information about potential donours before you approach them. Make sure that you know what your donour's values are and if you would like to be associated with those values.”

“Tell them what you do, what you are passionate about and what your values are. Don't forget to ASK for a donation,” she emphasises.

Fundraisers should distinguish between major gifts, annual gifts, planned gifts and bequests and an endowment fund.  “As for the latter, the capital stays intact, while you use only the interest,” she explains.

Fundraisers should evaluate and benchmark their fundraising activities on a regular basis.

They should ask themselves what has worked so far, and what their new target amount is.

“Remember that small amounts amount to big amounts,” Ms Mopolong says.

“Lavaria residence is only in its third year of existence and does not have the huge reserves that some of the other, older NWU residences have,” says Lavaria house parent, Ms Charmaine Coetzee. “However, Ms Mopelong made the daunting task of raising funds seems much more manageable.”

Daarom is 'n Papsmeer so belangrik.

Spring has sprung

To celebrate the new life that Spring brings, South African National blood Service (SANBS) is hosting various clinics to get blood donors' safe blood pumping.

Spring is normally an important time for SANBS to collect blood to recover from the loss in blood supply after the difficult winter months.

This year Spring is particularly important for SANBS as the organisation experienced a major blood shortage in July. This was due to many donors being ill with cold and flu.Budding and existing donors, between the age of 16 and 65, who weigh 50kg or more and lead sexually safe lifestyles, are encouraged to spring into action and head for their nearest blood donor centre.

For more information on your nearest donor centre, call 0800 11 9031 toll free.
