Bly! Bou Suid-Afrika

“BLY!

Bou Matlosana”

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

For whom the bell tolls

In 1624 the famous poet and Anglican preacher John Donne wrote a piece of prose titled: ‘No man is an island’. The last line is particularly apt. It goes: ‘Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.’

Donne wrote No man is an island during the spread of the plague. With so much death around, mortality was uppermost in most people’s minds. So it is not surprising that he preached about death and mortality from the pulpit. This was reality and I imagine that the correct thing for a preacher to do, was to talk about the passing from a worser life to a better one.

In this piece, known as Meditation #17 Donne contemplates two issues. The first is that all of mankind is connected and has been created by one author. As such we cannot exist in isolation. We are forced by our very nature to co-exist with our fellow man. For better or worse. The second is the mortality of the ringing bell. A literal translation of the text quite simply means that the peal of the bell is not necessarily for the next person. It could just be us next. Such was the situation of that time.

I would like to contemparise this and translate this famous last line as that we should not sit in judgement of our fellow man. This is something that I believe most of us are guilty of. I know, I am one of them. There is, and we know it, a difference between a harmless comment about the person next door putting his house up for sale, and taking delight in him having to put his house up for sale because he has fallen on bad times. I believe it’s called kicking the man when he is down. We need to be careful not to judge too harshly, as next time it could be our turn.

There is a saying which goes that when your neighbour loses his job it’s a recession; when you lose yours it’s called a depression.

Citizens, certainly in the more established suburbs, have effectively succeeded in isolating themselves from one another. I for one, don’t mix with my neighbours like I used to. In an almost paradoxical way we have purchased our privacy and our isolation at the expense of our social commitment to each other. And yet, isn’t it strange how; in adversity, we find ourselves forced to help each other. The recent storms that lashed the east coast of America is a prime example of what I am talking about. Watching on T.V. I sat in wonder at how people banded together to assist each other.

Possibly the great author is trying to tell (teach) us something. The other thing I find disconcerting is that the more society advances, the more fragmented she becomes. A fragility that can set in at the slightest provocation. Almost if there is a higher risk associated with our largesse.

Recently I was quite touched by a simple act of generosity that spoke volumes. A fellow Rotarian, John Mendonca and I, handed over a wheelchair to a kid who was in dire need of it. The family lived in a very poor part of a local township. Where survival requires everyone to cooperate. What should have been an unassuming event turned out to be an occasion of great festivity with neighbours gathering around to share in it. Sometimes less is more.

I hope I haven’t been too morbid this week, but hey!, let us be a little more considerate about those less fortunate than ourselves.

Chat again next week.

DESTITUTE LEARNERS GET UNIFORMS

On 16 September the Kenneth Kaunda District handed over school uniforms to twenty destitute learners of Keotshepile Primary School in Ikageng Extension 7, Potchefstroom. Among other dignitaries attending the event were District Executive Mayor Boitumelo Moloi, Members of Mayoral Committee, managers and Keotshepile teachers and School Governing Body members.
According to Zamaka Gwiji, the manager in the Office of the Executive Mayor, Keotshepile Primary was amongst a number of schools identified throughout the district for this specific project at the start of 2008.
“Unfortunately the school did not get a chance to receive uniforms when others did and that is why we are here today to correct the mistake that was done,” said Gwiji. Identification of learners who are reported destitute and needy received the uniforms. The criterion thereof was carried through by teachers, as they spend most of their days with these children.

One of these teachers is Mpho Kgasane, who is also a member of the School Support Committee for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children. She says a regularly updated list of children living below the poverty line and the number of community volunteers helps significantly when coming to feeding schemes and related programmes.
“The volunteers are given addresses of these kids to go and assess the state of their homes. Some of them are identified through their academic performances and behaviour towards their school work,” said Kgasane.
She said they were receiving extra assistance through a monthly sponsorship R1 000 grant from the Media in Education Trust (MIET) from the Nederlands which some of it is used for feeding scheme to the needy learners and those who volunteer their services. “We are happy that what happened here today bestows the vows taken by our leaders and their efforts to help are recognized,” Kgasane said.

The uniforms cost the district council just above R11 000 and each hamper comprise of shoes, shirts, Golf shirts, trousers/tunic and a pair of sox.
Councillor Boitumelo Moloi said it felt humbling and honourable for the district municipality to donate the uniform to the needy. The Executive Mayor said although the gesture is good, it is not meant to make others different to the rest of the community.
“These boys and girls are not any different to you who have not received anything today. It is just that they need it more because of the situation they find themselves in,” said the Executive Mayor.

By hulle is prof.

A plan to reduce pollution

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) senior researcher Patricia Forbes said their institution had embarked on several projects across the country to analyse pollution and to develop ways to mitigate its effects.

Among the projects is the development of an intelligent traffic sensor network, which would provide information on the effects of traffic interventions, such as the Gautrain or traffic-free days, on air quality.

"Various interventions are possible for each potential source of pollution, from improved vehicle maintenance to the use of the Basa Magogo method for fire generation in non-electrified areas," she said.

The Basa Magogo is a project that trains users of coal burning stoves to pack the coal more efficiently in a brazier.

Research has shown that this can reduce the number of upper respiratory tract problems for the local population, a household could save as much as 140kg of coal per year, toxic emissions are removed during cooking while household income increases because expenditure on coal reduces significantly. University of Pretoria pollution expert Dr Gerrit Kornelius said the reduction of smoke from domestic fires would be the best way to reduce pollution and improve the health of city residents.

"Traffic measures in certain areas are probably second, but this would to some extent be dictated by national policy on fuel quality and the fitting of catalytic converters," he said. – iol

Bespreek nou jou kaartjie by Marlize Fritz van Agri NW of Willa Green van Vrystaat Landbou. Kontak Marlize by (018) 632-3612 of e-pos marlize@agrinw.co.za, Willa by (051) 444-4609 of e-pos willa@vslandbou.co.za.

Klerksdorp Lion's & Hospice raise funds.

In today's financial climate it takes hard word and very motivated groups of people to raise funds for worthy causes.  The Klerksdorp Lion's hosted an Art Exhibition on Friday in aid of Hospice, and even though the Art was exceptional it was a pity the evening lacked a few more of our local art enthusiasts.  It is however, never to late to make a donation and in the event anyone would like to contribute items of food, clothing or anything else to Hospice, please contact Joan de Jong or the staff at Hospice on

SUPER REKORD VIR SUPER KHS KRIEKETSPAN!
