Declan and Luclin from HTS attended their Matric Farewell in a very romantic, fairytale, Cinderella kind of way with the help of Jolene Walkinshaw from Samsung who made it possible for them to arrive in a carriage, which left the audience amazed. Jolene the owner of the carriage quoted that Carriage Driving is not what you think it is. It is not for older people going on a Sunday afternoon drive through the country, but a highly exciting, adrenaline pumping discipline that can capture the interest of the entire family. Where other disciplines are about the rider, the horse, tack and training, carriage driving also encompasses many other technical aspects, it is romantic and fun, and requires skill, horsemanship and schooling. Most of all, it is an art. In credit and in overdraft My wife and I attended a wedding in Johannesburg recently. During the ceremony the minister, (who was at the top of his game when it came to this sort of thing) trying to settle nerves, cracked the odd “one-liner”. And everyone laughed. The ice was broken and everything went smoothly. During the reciting of the vows: 'In sickness and in health' . . . etc, I thought that it might be apt to add an additional line to the vows: 'In credit and in overdraft'. After all, the financial mess a lot of people are in right now, it might impact on their married lives and they need to remind themselves as to why they got married in the first place. For love! Not for money. At the sumptuous reception afterwards, and in between the speeches, and the casual banter at our table, I got to thinking about the origins of banking. I have this ability to think of the oddest things at weddings and at funerals. Last Friday evening it just happened to be about banking. Interestingly, the word bank is derived from the Latin word banca, meaning bench. In the early days of banking depositors and bankers sat on public benches and conducted business. Similarly, the word money comes from the same Latin quarter. The Roman mint was situated in the temple of Juno Moneta and the issue of coinage was supervised by the magistrates. However because of the vastness of the Roman Empire, coinage was not always readily available to pay soldiers, so they were paid in salt. Hence the word, salary. As far as I can establish, the first banks were probably the religious temples of the ancient world and date around the third millennium B.C. Initially coinage was not used and deposits consisted of grain and later other goods including cattle. Eventually precious metals such as gold, in the form of easy-to-carry compressed plates were used. Temples and palaces were the safest places to store gold, as they were well attended and well built. Temples were also sacred and served as a deterrent to any would-be thieves. My, how things have changed. Today our churches are crying out for support. By the 5th century B.C. banking was well established in the Mediterranean region with Greece having the most advanced system. The Greeks were also the first to operate a credit system, independent of coinage. These letters of credit enabled a client to 'cash' the note at some other place without the additional risk of having to cart coinage with him. These were the first cheques. According to history, the first central bank, was the state granary in Alexandria. The Romans were the first to charge interest on loans and to pay interest on deposits. With the ascent of Christianity, the charging of interest was seen as immoral. The Jews held similar views, with both the Torah and the Hebrew Bible criticizing interest taking. Jews were forbidden to charge interest on loans to other Jews, but were allowed to charge interest on business with non-Jews or Gentiles. To this day Muslims have issue with receiving interest on investments. Because of this impasse and with the fall of Rome, banking was abandoned in Western Europe and did not revive until the time of the Crusades. Pivotal to the history of the Crusades is the need to understand the relationship between Charlemagne, the King of the Franks and Haroun-al-Raschid, the Caliph of Baghdad. The two leaders often corresponded. Probably about philosophy, science, medicine and spiritual matters. Around 800 A.D. the Caliph sent ambassadors to Charlemagne with four gifts: a splendid tent, a water-clock, an elephant and the keys to the Holy Sepulcher. This latter present set the Holy Roman Empire aflame as to who was the protector of the Christians in Jerusalem. A groundswell of resentment and enthusiasm gained momentum. A new war, a religious war, the Crusade, the War of the Cross was being preached. An opportunity presented itself the old kind of religion ruled the common man like a slave by fear. The new kind of religion made a man of him. Here was an opportunity to prove himself. But Crusades, like a journey to the moon, costs money. Lots of money. So around 1100 A.D. we see the reemergence of banking in Western Europe with the Templars and Hospitaliers acting as bankers in the Holy Land. Special taxes were raised to fund the Crusades. The first foreign exchange contracts were entered into during these times with money being borrowed in Europe and repaid in such places as Constantinople. The Knights Templar became so successful as bankers that they served as the unofficial treasury in France. In 1306 Philip IV of France had the Templars arrested and confiscated their wealth. Similarly he expelled the Jews and Italian bankers and got hold of their wealth as well. The next significant development in banking was the start of the Lombard moneychangers in Europe who positioned themselves along busy pilgrim routes important for trade. The oldest bank, still operating today, is the Italian bank Monte du Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472. With the invention of the printing press by Gutenberg in 1440 came the introduction of paper money. No discussion on banking would be complete without a mention of the coffee houses of London; the most famous of which is Lloyds. While places like Lloyds are usually associated with insurance underwriting, these coffee houses served as popular meeting places for sailors, merchants, shipowners and suppliers of capital the London banking community. Unpinning all of this was the lucrative East India trade, including human trade slavery. Today banks and banking are commonplace throughout the world. They provide an invaluable service to society; most notably as keepers of our hard-earned cash. But more than that, banks serve as a barometer of how healthy economies are. And right now some banks (mostly overseas) are in serious need of a dose of good old fashioned confidence. It's just struck me also as to why I thought of banking at the wedding This was no ordinary little event. One of those inexpensive Kodak moments. The bride's parents definitely did not give her away. She cost a small fortune. Chat again next week. The event was attended by its local members and guests of honour. “After 43 years of existence, our members are still alive and kicking. For us, size does not count. We are here to serve the greater community of Klerksdorp and our focus is to improve the quality of life,” said the Master of Ceremonies, Lion Shane Papé. The Lions Club Klerksdorp was sponsored by the Lions Club of Vereninging and was charted on 19 October 1965. Over the past 43 years, many of the members of the club have served as cabinet officers of District 410B, thereby contributing to the well-being of Lions in the district. It has been responsible for the chartering of the Stilfontein, Orkney, Standerton & Bloemhof Lions Clubs. Present at this memorable event was its 43rd President, Lion Jean van der Merwe. “We are committed to our motto We serve,” and “We will continue to uphold our value system - Liberty, Intelligence, Our, Nation, Safety - Acronym for LIONS, which our Club was founded upon,” sighted Lion President Jean van der Merwe. The club is actively involved in district projects such as Bright Sight where Local optometrists test approximately 6-10 needy persons per month. The club then supplies spectacles from as low as R140 per pair per person. Help to Hear initiative provides hearing aids from as little as R200 per pair. White Cane day is dedicated to the fund raising for sight related projects. Peace Poster Contest was born out of the need to promote a spirit of understanding between the different cultures in the world. Other projects include, World Service Day in line with the Club's motto and the selling of Christmas fruit cakes. “Over the years, we have been involved in fund raising events to raise the much needed funds in order to sustain these projects and assist the needy,” added Lion President. “The feeding scheme to the elderly in Randles Park and the residents of the railway houses at Builders Market, supplying of a guide dog to one of our local blind residents and the assistance to the Adonai Centre for the disabled to mention but a few.” Lion President quoted a lesson to be learned from a young boy named Kobus, who is a multiple disabled child from Adonai. “In many instances, the intention to give to others has resulted in us receiving much in lessons of life. So contented with his situation and extremely excited when giving attention to him. What a humbling experience when realising how we complain and easily get depressed about trivial things,” he said A challenge to the Klerksdorp Lion's Club was presented by the Guest of Honour at the event, a resident Othalmologist, Dr. Maphenduka. Having tabled statistics related to the number of South Africans suffering from Cataract, an eye disease that is characterised by clouding of the lens in the eyes that affects vision, Dr Maphenduka challenged the club to adopt rural hospitals by setting up mobile clinics where one or two patients could undergo a screening process. According to Dr. Maphenduka, there are about 48 Million South Africans who are blind due to Cataract. She added that most affected areas are rural where there is no access to medical services, in this instance, cataract surgery, hence the backlog is high. “Seeing that the Klerksdorp Lions Club is already involved with the Bright Sight Project, consider sponsoring cataract work in rural hospitals, especially in areas such as Taung, where the backlog is high.” To crown the evening, Lion Gordon Lamont received a Presidents Award in appreciation of his excellent service and a great year as President for the 2007 / 2008 fiscal year.
Ferreira wéér as jong
TWAS word deur ASSAF (Academy of Science of South Africa) geadministreer. Hy is in 2000 as lektor in fisika aangestel, was twee jaar later 'n senior lektor en is verlede jaar as medeprofessor in dié vakgebied aangestel. Venter receives scholarship from NASA A world-wide honour has fallen to the lot of a post-doctoral student of the North-West University's Potchefstroom Campus when he received a research scholarship from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Dr Christo Venter of the subject group physics is one of only sixty scientists in the world who received this scholarship, which is awarded in different subject courses. He also received the highly sought-after Fermi GLAST research scholarship. GLAST is the Gamma Ray Large-Area Space Telescope that was launched earlier this year. The NASA post-doctoral programme provides unique research opportunities to highly talented people to be able to share in research programmes at NASA and to mould pioneers for the future. The scholarship is designed to contribute to NASA's space science, astrobiology, aviation skills and space operations and explorations. Venter obtained his doctor's degree at the NWU Puk in September. According to his external examiner of NASA, Dr Alice Harding of the Goddard space flight centre, he unlatched new knowledge and for the first time, developed a wholly three dimensional model for fast rotating neutron stars. The promoter of his thesis, Prof Okkie de Jager (a prominent researcher in space physics himself), says they were in Poland when the news of his scholarship award reached them. De Jager furthermore says that a considerable number of top scientists who were attending the same congress immediately wanted to know how it was possible for someone from Africa to reach this top position. “They also wanted to know where Potchefstroom is, because the NWU Puk is not even on the world radar screen”. “I just wonder when last a recently graduated NWU Puk student has received such a high award which literally makes the best of America's universities jealous,” writes De Jager from Poland. Venter passed his matric at Potchefstroom Gimnasium ten years ago with eight higher degree distinctions, as well as the highest average for matric in North-West. He passed his BSc and MSc degrees at the NWU Puk with distinction and ever since he has attended several international conferences as a lecturer in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, and is co-author of 56 international publications, of which 46 are with the HESS transnational group. This group won the Descartes science prize of the European Union in 2006. North West Government and ABSA sign a Memorandum of Understanding North West Premier Edna Molewa today entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with banking giant, ABSA, on behalf of the North West Provincial Government at a function held in Rustenburg to ensure integrated housing delivery to the people of the Province. This is part of the government's continuous Provincial Growth and Development Strategy (PGDS) meant to grow the economy of the North West. “The quality of life of the provincial population has improved dramatically since 1996. This is reflected in the increase of the percentage of households with access to piped water, access to electricity, availability of appropriate sanitation facilities and the provision of basic shelter”, Molewa said. “Challenges are however still experienced with the uncontrolled emergence of informal settlements and the above average growth registered in the number of households looking for shelter since 1996”, she added. Premier Molewa also said that the MOU seeks to bring together the intentions of National Government, the wishes of the North West Government and the obligation of Local Government to maximize the impact of private and public sector resources in the delivery of good quality services and housing with the ABSA initiative to assist in the implementation of housing units to be owned or leased by families with a low or middle-income residing within the North West Province.“We value this partnership arrangement very much as it is built on sound principles that you will find in various clauses of the MOU”, she said. Meanwhile Luthando Vutula, ABSA Managing Executive said that the MoU remains a culmination of months of work between ABSA and the North West Provincial Government. “It is important to say that from ABSA that we are prepared to do whatever they can to help the people of South Africa. It is our duty to ensure that all people own homes as homeownership helps give them stability and are thus able to play a role in the economy”
“This signing of the
MoU is basically to ensure delivery of intergrated housing in the NW and
will give renewed energy to housing projects”, Vutula added. St Conrad's College under 11A Cricket Team has done exceptionally well this year. They have won al their league matches and are through to the North West finals. Exceptional achievements include 3 hat tricks Tristan Edwards, Joshua Berry and Mbulelo Matunda and Dylan de Gouveia scored a century. We wish them good luck in the North West Finals KHS Piet de Villiersseunskoshuis het op Dinsdag 14 Oktober met 'n baie unieke tradisie begin. Beste vordering in Akademie: Brendon Booysen. |
