Occupation: Graphic Designer at Yourcity
When I look into the mirror every morning I think: I wonder what today
is going to throw my way and who I'll cross paths with.
My favourite people in the world are: My family and friends…and…Tammy…my
doggy
My favourite quote is: With only a thought followed by a positive
action, you can work towards moving the world forward in your own
special way
Whackhead Simpson makes me laugh.
The greatest lesson life has taught me so far is: Everything happens for
a reason and when one door closes another opens.
I'll do almost anything for: The love of my life
When I get stressed I am most likely to throw my tantrum out a window.
I want my tombstone to read: Loved and missed by all
I wouldn't mind being stuck in an elevator with: A doctor…cause I'll
have a heart attack
In three words I am: Feisty, Hardworking and Friendly
If I had a million rand to spare I would: Not spare it…it's to little
I live in Klerksdorp because: I love the city and the people
The first thing I would save from a house fire is: My pets and my
engagement ring
My nickname is: Lanie
I love my job because: Designing forms part of my arty personality
LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN
The Art of Enjoyment
Over the years I have enjoyed reading John Steinbeck. To put it in a
nutshell, I guess there is an earthy honesty to his work: where deals
are struck on a handshake; and where your neighbours are your friends.
Last Thursday, after a busy day in Bloemfontein, I kicked off my shoes,
laid back on the couch and thumbed through the movie channels. I came
across Cannery Row, Steinbeck's famous story of life in a down-and-out
fishing town in California during the Great Depression. A place where
you just got along with each other.
Watching the movie for about the third time, it dawned on me that here
was my article for next week. Not that I wanted to write about Cannery
Row, its rather that I wanted to write about the previous evening; at
the local Portuguese Club, and I wanted to write about enjoyment. Johnny
Mendonca, my friend, had invited a couple of us from our Rotary Club to
join him at the Portuguese Club for a bit of a party and to witness
another round of milhinhos. More about milhinhos later.
Johnny said the party was going to start at about four-thirty. Now, I
have been to plenty of Portuguese functions over the years, and the one
thing I have learned is to add about two hours onto the starting time of
anything. So I got there at six-thirty. There was a certain din and a
busyness about the place. Everyone was doing something: braaing, pouring
drinks or playing cards. A lot of talking as well. It doesn't matter
what they were talking about, or the fact that some were talking more
than others (the party had been going for a while). A merry vibrancy
co-mingled with the grey, shifting smoke. Here and there, you got the
odd, 'ola', 'por favor', 'obrigado', 'saúde' and an assortment of swear
words, which can be readily understood in any language. Unfortunately
they cannot be reproduced here. But you knew they were swear words they
come from the heart, rather than the head.
The main meal was a fish dish known as bacalhau, adequately laced with
garlic (three days later, my wife still reminded me of it). I dined with
Frankie de Freitas and Bobby Cardosa. We spoke about this and that, and
nothing in particular. A veritable pot-pourri ranging from American
politics to B.E.E.; from the price of maize to the economic crisis. The
kind of things that the characters in Cannery Row spoke about. Somehow,
and for some reason, at the time, it all makes sense. There is a certain
potency to it. A potency galvanized by the ambience of the evening. It's
a once-off thing, never to be repeated again. And why should it? It was
a snapshot of life: at a certain time, in a certain place. The next time
there will be a different setting with different characters. A new
electricity. You wake up the next day with another memory woven into
your personal tapestry of existence.
By the time dinner was finished, and the din a few decibels higher, it
was time for milhinhos. Great excitement as the players, from various
towns gathered around a table to do battle. It looked like a rugby scrum
was going to take place. There was one significant difference, there
were no teams and there was no referee. Everyone was in it for
themselves. From what I can gather it's a game of chance.
There was much gesticulation and much animation and commotion. I battled
to understand (still do) how the game is played. From what I could glean
the game is played with three coins, the object being to 'call' the hand
of the other players. If you 'call' it wrong it seems if you are down
but definitely not out. Something like cricket where you can be bowled
out, but you can still come out and field later on, and bowl the crap
out of the opposing batting team. On this occasion, about a half an hour
later, someone was eventually eliminated. Bad luck for him, as he has to
host the next party and feed the crowd. Johnny has agreed to show me how
to play milhinhos sometime.
I must point out that there is great emotional intensity involved as
well. For some poor fellow it just got too much and he had to be taken
home.
I came away thinking, what a nice evening. I can't recall when I have
laughed so much. I even forgot about work. And that for me is what
enjoyment is all about: to be able to transport yourself to some other
place, away from the pressing reality of life. Even if it is just for a
few hours from time to time, we owe it to ourselves, and to those around
us. Otherwise we will surely get caught up in the 'everydayness' of it
all. How dull, how very sad.
Everybody is capable of writing his own Cannery Row now and then.
Chat again next week.

'VICTIMS to VICTORY’
Once again the 2nd Annual Woman's Conference 'VICTIMS to VICTORY', held
at the Methodist Church Klerksdorp over the past weekend proved a
triumphant experience for those who attended. There were speakers and
visitors from different denominations as well as from far a field.
As they gave testimonies of pain and recovery, they sent a message of
HOPE to all people, that we can be survivors. Many women are 'Victim's'
of insecurity, helplessness, abandonment and mental anguish as a result
of the traumas during their life and find themselves silently hiding
behind their fears with no way out. Victims to Victory' was an
opportunity for woman of all ages to relate their own trauma to someone
else's and find comfort and reassurance that we can be Victorious
knowing that with 'Gods Help all things are possible'. It takes a brave
woman to confront her pain and take charge, seek help and move forward,
especially when you know the journey will be three steps forward and one
step back. The Healing Team made these two days of reconciling, facing
fears and recovery, a true celebration of Victory!
