My favourite people in the world are: My girlfriend Stacey, Stewie Griffen, Andrew Schwaab for making the music he does.

My favourite quote is: "Egotism is the anesthetic that dulls the pain of stupidity." --Frank Leahy

The greatest lesson life has taught me so far is: : Do what it takes to do what you want to, and do it well.

I'll do almost anything for: A pack of speckled eggs, Playstation, and my friends.

When I get stressed I am most likely to throw myself out the window so I could run home.

I wouldn't mind being stuck in an elevator with: My girlfriend, and her two friends, Kate Beckinsale and Halle Berry.

In three words I am: Wayne Jason Viljoen

If I had a million rand to spend I would: Take over the world…HAHAHA

I live in Klerksdorp because: Joburg and Cape Town won't take me.

The first thing I would save from a house fire is: My electric toe nail clipper.

My nickname is: Beavis

I love my job because: I enjoy being creative and I love the rewarding feeling of getting something too work.

Don't panic! Plastic plates still permitted

Panicking over recent stories in the print media that you'll be paying R800 for number plates? Don't - here's why...

A recent article threw an unnecessary scare into SA drivers by saying that new cars registered since January 1 and fitted with acrylic number plates are "unroadworthy" and could land their owners with big fines. Or even see their vehicles booted off the roads. It said that only embossed aluminium number plates were now legal on new registrations and that they would cost about R800 a pair compared to about R200 for acrylic plates.

In fact, the regulations promulgated on May 4 2007 (see our story at the time), and which came into effect at the beginning of 2009, state only that from January 1, 2009 the number plates on all new registrations must be mounted "within 20mm of the edges by means of 4mm rivets or 4mm one-way, self-tapping screws", like those used on burglar bars. Double-sided sticky tape or clip-in holders are no longer legal because the number plates are too easy to steal. They also lay down minimum sizes for number plates, which are the same as previously but now also allow a smaller size (250 x 165mm) for motorcycles.

Nowhere do the regulations stipulate that the number plates must be made of metal.

However, an amendment to the National Road Traffic Act, promulgated on November 19, 2008 stipulates that "the licence number of all motor vehicles licensed in the Province of Gauteng shall on 1 November 2013 be displayed on a metal plate".
Embossed aluminium numbers plates cost, a platemaker said, the same as acrylic (R175 a pair) but on some vehicles it is necessary to mount them using a metal-reinforced frame, hence the extra cost although R300 each for two simple, sheet-steel frames seems rather expensive.

A Cape Town number-plate provider told motoring.co.za he thought the story had come from a manufacturer of aluminium number-plate blanks to boost the sales of its products. – iol

Mpho is an asset to science

My message to the youth is: set your goals clearly, pursue them, take the brave step and focus your energy op that which you want and believe in it. Remember, everything begins with a dream. What you make of it, is in your hands.
This inspiriting message comes from Mpho Motoboli, a young master's degree student in chemistry at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University who could realize her own dream. As a normal child in a township, excelled and obtained bursaries and opportunities with her academic performances, to where she stands today. Her latest performance is a floating trophy and the Micromeretics medal which she obtained for the best scientific poster at the annual conference of the Catalyst Society of South Africa (Catsa). According to the director of the research focus area, chemical resource beneficiation, at the NWU, Prof Manie Vosloo, it is one of the two most important prizes in the country postgraduate students in the catalyst community can win.Mpho says she has always been inquisitive about how things work and what chemical substances found in food and water. This stimulated and motivated her to go and investigate herself and improve her knowledge. “I have always wanted to excel and the most important was to have clear goals. I have always said that I would have another title (for instance doctor) before I turn 30.”
“Children must not think science is difficult. If you are interested in it, investigate for yourself and try to establish the ins and outs.” Mpho says her primary school training was in a township school in Sebokeng where their facilities were exceptionally scanty. She passed her matric with exemption at the Roschnee Secondary School.
Initially, she hoped to study at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, but her parents said it was too far. She went to stay with a family member in Mafikeng and registered for a BSc degree in physics and chemistry at the Mafikeng Campus of the NWU.
In her second year she obtained a bursary from the National Union for Mineworkers for her academic performances and passed her degree with several distinctions. Mpho says she was very disappointed when she could not obtain employment for six months after her studies. She obtained a bursary from the national research foundation (NRF) and passed her honours in chemistry cum laude within the minimum period. In 2007 she reacted to an advertisement of the Department of Science and Technology that was searching for 125 young scientists to work at Science Centres across the country. She was placed at the Science Centre of the NWU in Potchefstroom and her colleagues convinced her to register for her master's degree studies this year. She speaks highly of Prof Jan Smit, Director of the School for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, who took it upon himself to look after her. Mpho is a student in the catalyst and synthesis research group of the research focus area chemical resource beneficiation. Her promoters are Dr. Johan Jordaan and Gerhard Lachmann. The title of her poster presentation she was rewarded for was “Design and modelling of new salicyclideneaniline derivatives as ligands for Grubbs-type pre-catalysts”. Mpho, one of twins form a family of four children, says she will be handing in her dissertation next year and is all set to proceed with her doctor's degree.
“I see myself as a researcher and will most decidedly never stop being one. I will gladly disclose science to other children in future, because it is my passion.”

Mpho said, apart from her hard work and perseverance, she owes the NUM, Department of Science and Technology, the NRF, her promoters and her parents a great debt of gratitude for their support.

Giving a Moebius syndrome sufferer a smile

The day before her operation, Kelebogile, who turned 12 on 19 January, wrote a letter to her surgeon.

"Dear doctor, would you be very careful and be sure that I will be fine. I believe in you doctor. Please ask God to help you and His hands will help you to do the job.”

Kelebogile, who lives in Potchefstroom, North West, has Moebius syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterised by facial paralysis.

People with Moebius syndrome can't smile or frown.

She was diagnosed at age 3, and had to wait a further nine years before her mother Suzan heard about the doctor who could give Kelebogile her smile.
Professor George Psaras is the medical director and co-founder of the Smile Foundation, an organisation that helps children with facial disfigurements to receive the reconstructive surgery.

Nelson Mandela initiated the idea nine years ago when he made a request for the first child, Thando, to have an operation.

Thando had Moebius syndrome, and wrote to Madiba to ask him to help.

During the Vodacom Facial Reanimation Smile Week, from January 19 to 23, four children aged 7 to 12 with facial paralysis will receive surgery free of charge.

Facial paralysis causes a lot of psychological trauma for children.
"They go through life as if they're wearing a mask. A lot of people think they have mental problems, not just physical problems," said Psaras.

Kelebogile wrote in her diary: "Sometimes in my life I was very sad and angry because they do not want to talk to me because I am different and I can't talk nicely. I was sometimes crying and I remember someone saying that God has a special plan for me.”

On the day of her operation, she wrote: "Today I am a little scared and sad. I hope it will be a great operation.”

During the procedure, the surgical team harvests a section of muscle from the inner thigh and transfers it to the cheek, where the facial nerve is sutured to the nerve from the muscle.

The critical part is to get the muscle to survive, and to ensure that nerve impulses are able to travel from the brain to the muscle.
A few months after surgery, the children begin to smile.

"It's fantastic, it's hard to explain in words. When you see these kids smile after two or three months, it's the best gift," said Psaras, who has performed the procedure 17 times.

One side of Kelebogile's face was operated in May 2007, and by August she had a half-smile.

On 16 January, she underwent her second procedure, and now it's only a matter of time before her smile is complete.

Suzan dressed her in a beautiful floral dress so that she wouldn't feel like she was in hospital.

Some Super 14 rugby players were at the hospital as part of Vodacom's Tries for Smiles campaign. – iol

South African Heritage Site The Vredefort Dome

Some 2 billion years ago a meteorite 10 kilometres in diameter hit the earth about 100km southwest of Johannesburg, creating an enormous impact crate. This area, near the town of Vredefort in the Free State, is known as the Vredefort Dome. It is a natural heritage site, inscribed in 2005, situated in the Free State and North West.

Vrederfort Dome, approximately 120km south west of Johannesburg, is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme.

Dating back 2, 023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme found on earth so far. With a radius of 190km, it is also the largest and the most deeply eroded. Vredefort Dome bears witness to the world's greatest known single energy release ever, which caused devastating global change, including, according to some scientists, major evolutionary changes. It provides critical evidence of the earth's geological history and is crucial to our understanding of the evolution of the planet. Despite their importance to the planet's history, geological activity on the earth's surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most impact sites and Vrederfort is the only example on earth to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor.
The meteorite, larger than Table Mountain, caused a thousand-megaton blast of energy. The impact would have vaporised about 70 cubic kilometres or rock - and may have increased the earth's oxygen levels to a degree that made the development of multicellular life possible. The world has about 130 crater structures of possible impact origin. The Vredefort Dome is among the top three, and is the oldest and largest clearly visible meteorite site in the world. The original crater, now eroded away, was probably 250 to 300 kilometres in diameter. It was larger than the Sudbury impact structure in Canada, about 200km in diameter.

At 2 billion years old, Vredefort is far older than the Chixculub structure in Mexico which, with an age of 65 million years, is the site of the impact that led to the extinction of dinosaurs.

Vredefort's original impact scar measures 380km across and consists of three concentric circles of uplifted rock. They were created by the rebound of rock below the impact site when the asteroid hit. Most of these structures have eroded away ad are no longer clearly visible. The inner circle, measuring 180km, is still visible and can be seen in the beautiful range of hills near Parys and Vredefort. It is this area that was named a World Heritage Site.
Vredefort Dome is the oldest, largest, and most deeply eroded complex meteorite impact structure in the world. It is the site of the world's greatest single, known energy release event. It contains high quality and accessible geological (outcrop) sites which demonstrate a range of geological evidences of a complex meteorite impact structure. The rural and natural landscapes of the serial property help portray the magnitude of the ring structures resulting from the impact. The serial nomination is considered to be a representative sample of a complex meteorite impact structure. A comprehensive comparative analysis with other complex meteorite impact structures demonstrated that it is the only example on earth providing a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor, thereby enabling research into the genesis and development of an astrobleme immediately post impact.

Many activities can be enjoyed in the area. From river rafting, river tubing, abseiling, horse riding, mountain biking, archery or walking. Read more interesting facts about the Vredefort Dome in next weeks issue.

Wessie-“sole” nou “WARE” WESSIES

2010 tickets on sale in 21 days

South Africans will be queueing and hogging the Internet when tickets for the 2010 Soccer World Cup go on sale in three weeks. Soccer-mad locals starved for international matches on home soil are expected to flock to branches of First National Bank and to Fifa's website. An estimated three million tickets will be made available to everyone, but only locals will be allowed to buy the cheaper category four tickets - which constitute 15 percent of the total. The price for these ranges from $20 (R186) for a group stage match to $150 (R1 395) for the final. Local Organising Committee media manager Jermaine Craig said they expected a dash for tickets when they went on sale.Craig said World Cup tickets would be sold only on the official Fifa website (www.fifa.com) and at FNB.
Soccer enthusiasts will be limited to 12 tickets a match to prevent block bookings ending up in scalpers' hands. While tickets for the public will go on sale in three weeks, hospitality packages have been selling "way beyond expectation".
Match Hospitality's head of marketing, Peter Csanadi, said there had been a lot of interest from local and multinational companies.
"South Africans had the first option before sales were opened to the rest of the world," Csanadi said. The packages aimed at companies entertaining clients in private suites. Csanadi's advice to South Africans was to enjoy it. – iol
