St. Valentine's Story
Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during
the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled
by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I
wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to
join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to
leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men
signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy
idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind
joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages.
Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was
preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law! Did I
mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry
couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on
performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really
quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelight room with only the bride and
groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening
all the while for the steps of soldiers. One night, we did hear
footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying
escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used
to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was
death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things hap-pened.
Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and
notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed
in love. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard.
Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit
and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that
I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the
secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little
note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love
from your Valentine.”
I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on
Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D.
Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they
think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor
Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and
they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!

Respect
To the outsider, Klerksdorp is just another town on the N12 to Cape
Town. For me, however, there is a certain vitality to the place. A buzz
if you will. The only thing missing, in my opinion is a theatre. For the
rest, I think she has everything to offer. You can either be happy here,
or you can be unhappy. It's a question of choice. Your choice. Being in
the insurance industry, I am quite mobile, especially among the
multitude of businesses in the town and it's surrounds. I pop in here
and there to greet friends and clients. After a long day, around nine,
one of my favourite stops is Vaal Fisheries, that well-known
fish-and-chip shop at the bottom end of town. Even at that time of day,
the place is still teeming with customers. It's always busy. It's always
noisy with cars hooting, the crackling of cooking oil, fish being
chopped up and potatoes being squeezed into chips for the fryers. To the
inexperienced eye it looks like chaos. But there is an organized rhythm
to it all. A constant flow of custom in and out of the shop.
There is a new guard at the helm: Jose, Filipe, Paul and Rafael. They
took over from Manny who now resides in the old country Madeira.
I popped in a few nights ago, and as usual was shown to the inner
sanctum at the back of the shop. To get there you have to wind your way
there. Through the kitchen, down a corridor past the massive
refrigerators and into the confines of the command post. It's here where
the business decisions get made, staff matters get resolved.
Sharon, my wife, always knows when I have been there. 'Been to Vaal
Fisheries?' There's that distinctive 'smell of the shop.' Like the smell
of your favourite coffee shop. Or a bookshop that you like. Not sterile
like a hospital. I like the smell of Vaal Fisheries it smacks of hard
work and long hours. Definitely not the life of Riley.
I can see the animation behind the frosted glass door. I knock and Jose
opens and welcomes me in. Illidio Cabanita is also visiting. There is a
bottle of Johnny Walker on the table. They are speaking in Portuguese.
From the volume and smiling faces I work out that it's not serious. I
get offered a tot; but respectfully decline. No one is offended. We
converse in English.
I don't know how we got onto the topic. Funny, I can't put my finger on
it, but whenever I am in casual conversation with friends, we always end
up talking about subjects that are furthest from my mind. How we got to
speaking about respect, I don't know. It was a deep concerned
discussion. Not frivolous. Throughout, the thread was that respect had
to be earned. It's not something that can be bought, or bartered for,
and yet there are many who mistakenly think it's a tradable commodity.
Some even think it can be forced onto someone. At it's most primal,
respect, was (is!) about survival. It was an important cohesive force
which kept tribes together. Where a person's contribution earned him
respect, as the rest of the group very dependant in it. By and large we
no longer live in tribe formations. Society has advanced some. Does this
mean that the meaning of respect has changed and ameliorated over time?
The three of us did not think so. If anything it is as relevant today as
it ever has been. What has changed however, is the perception of respect
as a value. Some of the problem stems from the belief that in 'giving
in' to a child's excessive needs like handing him a few hundred rands to
blow on his friends at the local mall, will earn respect. This merely
perpetuates a deeper simmering divide between parent and child. And
whose fault is it anyhow? The parent's or the child's? A culture of
entitlement seems to have evolved in recent years. This in no small
measure, can be attributed to the recent good economic times, that was
enjoyed by all. I say was as there has been a serious slow-down in
economic activity here and elsewhere of late. This in turn will mean
less available cash for little Johnny to blow on his mates. The
consensus among the three of us was that the times we are in right now
are not necessarily bad and that it will force a fresh look at how
parents will interact with children. Possibly discipline and respect
will be looked at in a new light?
It was getting on in the night, but I found the discussion fascinating,
and sat a while longer. The discussion had evolved and matured to the
point where we considered the danger of mislabeling fear as respect. All
too often we interpret blind obedience as respect. This is nothing more
than bullying, against which a child will eventually retaliate and
possible become a problem child. 'I told you that kid was a no good!'
And we wonder why?
There is a degree of correlation between success and respect This is
true of most walks in life. In the climb to the top most successful
people have got there by showing respect and by so-doing have earned
respect in return.
There is just no short-cut with respect, like the growth of a tree from
seed to a leaf-bearing adult.
I came away a little puzzled. Puzzled in the sense that the concept of
respect is very wide. Yet it's a word we all know and use, almost
without thinking. Start picking and scratching at it and you find
something fresh, something different form when you first started out. I
realized that respect was in fact a gift. An infectious gift that we are
all capable of giving.
I can't recall, but I read somewhere that's 'in giving that we receive'.

NORTH WEST GOVERNMENT MEETING ITS MANDATE TO THE PEOPLE
Following last week's EXCO Lekgotla, the North West Provincial
Government is confident that it is meeting its mandate to the people,
notwithstanding the challenges that still lie ahead and the gaps that
need further attention.
On 2010 preparations, EXCO noted that progress on the upgrading of Royal
Bafokeng Stadium in line with FIFA requirements is at an advanced stage.
The stadium is being upgraded from 39 000 to 45 000 seating capacity. To
date 90% of the work has already been completed.
The following have been identified as training venues for the 2009
Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup: Moruleng Stadium, Mogwase
Stadium, Olympia Park stadium and Tlhabane Stadium. EXCO noted that
Olympia Park Stadium is the approved official Fan Park.
The provincial government has committed itself to address all
outstanding issues, in particular, budget deficit, in order to ensure
that the province can contribute towards delivering the best World Cup
ever.
Government will continue to work towards meeting targets for water,
sanitation and electricity in line with the Millenium Development Goals
as part of the overall objective of expanding access to a better life
for all.
The provincial government has registered progress in improving access to
basic services and in improving the quality of people's lives.
With regards to hospital and health care cervices, at least seven new
community health centers were completed in the province. Moses Kotane
Hospital is expected to be completed in February 2009; Job Shimankane
Tabane Hospital Trauma Unit will be renovated in preparation for 2010;
Bafokeng Health Centre will also be renovated as part of the
preparations for the 2009 and 2010 tournaments.
This year support to “no fee” have increased from 40% to 68%, and 116
educators have been trained on Maths and Science.
The provincial government is committed to broadening access to quality
education. In this regard, the focus will be on increasing the number of
learners who take Maths and Science.
EXCO Lekgotla identified skills development as one the key prerequisites
for economic growth and development and government's capacity to
deliver. Attention will continue to be paid on learnerships and
internships for critical and scarce skills.
Government will also ensure that all vacant positions especially
Director General, Deputy Director General, Chief Financial Officer and
Municipal Manager are filled timeously.
With regard to crime, the provincial government will continue to provide
an oversight role on safety and security matters and strengthen
community mobilization in the fight against crime.
EXCO noted that the Expanded Public Works Programme has created 72550
job opportunities since its inception up to the end of the second
quarter of 2008. As part of objective of growing the economy and pushing
back the frontiers of poverty, the focus will continue to be on SMME
development and Local Economic Development.
EXCO reflected on the current economic climate and agreed that the
benefits of government's record of economic prudence and fiscal
discipline has enabled the country to withstand the storm. However, EXCO
agreed that what was critical was concrete plans to soften the impact of
the cost of living on the worst affected communities.

Things to Do on Valentine's
Day
Are you starting to think of things to do on Valentine's Day? The key to
a special, romantic holiday is planning ahead. Whether you have been in
a relationship for a long time or just a few weeks a special Valentine's
Day celebration can make lasting memories.
Many couples like to go out to eat on Valentine's Day but if you really
want to do something with a personal touch try creating a romantic
picnic for the two of you in a special place. Generally you can't go
wrong with making plans to spend time together in a special way.
Men and women think very differently so take this into consideration
when you are making your plans for the day. Women, as a general rule,
like chick- flick type romantic interludes while guys may prefer more
sizzle.
Remember that you are planning the day for your spouse (or significant
other) and not for yourself. Try to come up with ideas that will make it
special for them.
1. Write a love poem about each other and read it out.
2. Call a radio station and dedicate a love song. Make sure he or she is
listening!!
3. Write 'I Love You' in a piece of paper and hide it in the lunch box
or purse.
4. Make heart-shaped bread toast for breakfast with hot chocolate dip.
5. Plan a very surprise candle light dinner at home after 9 PM.
6. Give warm oil massage or foot massage or back rub on a Sunday
morning.
7. Read 'Kamasutra' or 'My Secret Garden' or 'Men in Love' together.
8. Make a list of 10 things you love about each other.
9. Make a photo album of your favourite memories together.
10. Go camping on a rainy weekend with only one sleeping bag and one
blanket.
11. Shower together. (Warm 'Bubble Bath' is the best)
12. Turn off the lights and sing a love song together.
13. Use Red Ribbon to wrap your bed like a gift box bow.
14. Give a bouquet of red rose or wild flowers.
15. Take a walk together in the morning at your local park.
16. Make a donation in your spouse's name to a special cause or charity.
17. Watch an old black and white romantic movie and share a bowl of
popcorn.
18. Re-enact your very first meeting at the very first special place.
19. Surprise your spouse with tickets to a movie or special event.
20. Give an unexpected French kiss in the lift and demand to return it
back to you.
21. Send five different e-greetings just to say I Love You.
22. Spend a late night evening looking at the stars and make a wish
together.
23. Develop secret signals and use them to communicate.
24. Prepare a mini handwritten 'Love' invitation to do something
special.
25. Go to watch a movie in a drive-in movie theatre.
26. Eat a chocolate bar together without using hands, but only with the
mouth.
27. Surprise with a 'very very special' dress.
28. Buy a set of matching silk pajamas, and take turns modelling them
for each other.
29. Buy a new perfume or cologne.
30. Buy a new piece of gold or diamond jewellery.
31. Give a surprise by serving Sunday morning breakfast in bed.
32. Ask to pick a number between 1 and 50, then reward with that number
of kisses.

Cradle of Humankind
World Heritage Site
Only 45 minutes from Johannesburg, nestling in the peaceful Sterkfontein
rural valley, lies the Cradle of Humankind - a World Heritage Site - and
the world's richest hominid site.
The Fossil Hominid Sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and
Environs, known as the Cradle of Humankind, were declared a World
Heritage Site on 2 December 1999. The Cradle of Humankind covers an area
of over 47 000 hectares of privately owned land in the north western
corner of Gauteng and is home to over 17 000 residents.
In 2005, two other highly significant sites, Makapan and Taung were
listed as serial sites together with the Cradle of Humankind World
Heritage Site (COH WHS). Together, these are the Fossil Hominid sites of
South Africa.
The area is of outstanding universal value, because it contains a
complex of palaeo-anthropological sites, which have yielded some of the
most valuable evidence, world-wide, of the origins of modern humans,
hence its name “ Cradle of Humankind”.
The declared area is 47 000 hectares and extends approximately between
Oaktree, Hekpoort, Broederstroom and Lanseria in Gauteng.
Most of the site is on dolomite, a rock type which is slightly soluble
in water. This has two major consequences- the formation of caves and
the formation of fossils.
There are currently over 200 caves on the site, with possibly more to be
discovered. There are 13 fossil sites which have been extensively
examined and some have produced fossils of human ancestors and their
relatives. A variety of stone tools used by human ancestors such as axes
and scrapers have also been identified.
The range of other creatures which co-existed in the area included
extinct animals such as short-necked giraffe, giant buffalo, giant
hyaena and several species of saber-toothed cats.
Numerous fossils of extant creatures such as leopards and hartebeest
have also been found.
Early inhabitants
We know that Australopithecus africanus were present in the Cradle from
about 4-2 million years ago. It is generally thought likely that these
hominids (upright walking "apes"), or close relatives of them, were
human ancestors.
Paranthropus robustus is another hominid whose fossilized remains have
been found, but it is generally considered to be a branch of the hominid
family tree that became extinct, and not a very close relative of our
ancestors.
Homo ergaster, present around 1 million years ago is even more likely to
be a direct ancestor than Australopithecus having a very close
resemblance to modern humans Homo sapiens.
In the more modern era the area was occupied by /Xam or similar Khoe-San
people for what some historians believe to be 30 000years or longer,
then by Sotho-Tswana people from the 1500''s or possibly much earlier
who were displaced by Mzilikazi around 1820.
There after Voortrekkers in about the 1840''s and other whites
(thereafter) gradually took possession of the land.
Activities
Maropeng is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind
World Heritage Site.
The Sterkfontein Caves are open every day of the year except Christmas
and Easter.
Tours through the cave run every half an hour, with the first tour
leaving at 09h00 and the last tour leaving at 16h00. These tours last
approximately 45 minutes.
Another popular cave which does tours is Wonder Caves.
Both of these venues are suitable for children, but not easily
accessible for the elderly or disabled. Near to Wonder Cave is the Lion
and Rhino Nature Reserve.
Specialised scientist-led trips to Drimolen, Swartkrans and Sterkfontein
can be organised by prior

Flood alert: Families
evacuate
Four families evacuated their homes in Wolmaransstad in the North West
after the area was put on a flood alert, the district municipality said
on 30 January. "The families went to stay with relatives," said Dr
Kenneth Kaunda district municipality spokeswoman Wendy Sokupha. Their
homes were not damaged. On Friday morning residents of Arms Street in
Makwassie and Wolmaransstad's Maquassi Spruit were put on a flood alert.
By Friday afternoon, in Wilkeville in Klerksdorp, three houses had
suffered minor flood damage to some furniture. Emergency services were
assessing if the occupants should be moved. Sokupha said the
municipality had made available two council halls, should the need for
an evacuation space arise. She also said work was being done on the
Ig-Wilkens dam in Klerksdorp after it overflowed, spilling water onto
the main road.
"The technical department is seeing if it can... redirect the [dam]
water to the point where it is not going onto the main road."
With the weather clearing up slightly on Friday afternoon, Sokupha said
it was hoped the work could be completed within the day. Emergency
services from Potchefstroom had helped drain water.
In the afternoon the situation in the district was under control.
“For now we are fine," said Sokupha. – Sapa
Understanding the
Basic concepts of Debt
Budgeting is an important aspect of living and a person who knows how to
budget will go a long way in this commercialized society. Budgeting has
a lot to do with keeping the expenses less than the total income of the
household. Those who are very good at budgeting can come up with savings
even if they have meager incomes.
The problem sets in when a person fails to make an efficient financial
plan and his expenses exceed his earnings. When this happens, a person
has no choice but to borrow money to make up for his financial
deficiencies.
Borrowing once or twice because of a mismanaged financial plan is normal
but when borrowing becomes a regular thing that can put a person in
serious debt problems.
A person who borrows money from another is said to be in debt. The debts
of a person can be minimal or can reach up to millions depending on the
credit limits of each person.
Sometimes, a person who has assets but isn't liquid can use these assets
to get cash. Under this term, the person can be indebted for an amount
less or more than his assets.
There are laws that provide that a person can never be forced to render
services as payment for his debts. This is called undue servitude and is
prohibited by the laws of some countries. However, there are situations
when the person who is in debt opts to settle his obligation by
rendering his services. This can happen if a person is so talented in his
craft like painting and he opts to pay for his debts by creating a
painting of the creditor or the assignee of the creditor. Sometimes, a
person can pay his debts gradually or on an installment basis.
When a person dies, the law has provided for a hierarchy of preferences
in the payment of such debts. Of course, payment of taxes to the
government will always come first.
The second priority for debt payments includes funeral expenses of the
deceased and the payment for the wages of people.
Debt is really just a simple concept, which provides that a person who
borrowed something from another is duty bound to pay that debt.
However, the concept of debt becomes more complicated with the
introduction of other concepts like mortgage, interest rates and other
charges. Interest makes most debts double or even triple in amount.
More often, the interest rates due for a certain debt is even higher
than the principal amount borrowed. A person who wants to get credit can
do so in the form of a loan.
A loan can either be secured to unsecured. A secured loan means the
debtor borrowed some money and supported the loan by collateral or a
security for the loan.
The security or collateral can come in the form of a house and lot, a
car or any asset of the debtor. An unsecured loan means otherwise.
Most creditors require a security before granting a loan because it
gives them something to hold on to or to forfeit in case the debtor
defaults in payment.
When the debtor fails to pay the debt within the agreed timeframe then
the creditor can foreclose the security or the collateral.
However, having an unsecured loan doesn't mean that the debtor can
renege on his debts. When the debtor fails to pay his loans, the
creditor can still run after him by filing a case in court. When this
happens, the debtor who has no cash can sell some of his assets to pay
for his outstanding loan.
Being in debt is common even for the rich and the famous; the only
difference between them and the common people is that their debts can be
in the millions since they have more assets to support their loan.
Unsecured loans most often have higher interest rates to make up for the
lack of security.
Even third world countries are indebted to more developed countries.
However, the debts of a country can go on forever because they keep on
paying their loan but they also get new credits as their credit ratings
go up.

CHIL HOUSE Silent
Auction Big Success
According to officials, 6:00 p.m. January 29, was suppose to be a night
of caution for people from the Irene Park area because of the rising
levels of the Schoonspruit ; instead, the CHIL House was busy welcoming
guests to their first ever silent auction fund raiser. The event sought
to bring a diverse group of people together to learn more about a
relatively new ministry in Klerksdorp: CHIL (Christ is Life)
Guests were greeted with appetizers and refreshments, exclusive art work
of local artists, fellowship and soothing music. After being exposed to
a brief introduction of CHIL the auction was on its way; though not the
normal auction Klerksdorp is used to. Rather than an auctioneer and
bidding numbers, guests were given a time frame and pen. A silent
auction allows bidders to bid on whatever item they would like within
the allotted time simply by writing their name and bid on the bid sheet
next to the item on display. The night was ended in a huge success by
guest participation in all the activities

Tien, naamlik Sarel Prinsloo (3e), André Esterhuizen (4e), F C Robbertze
(6e) en Michelle Lotz (9e). Nog mooi rekords wat geslaan is, is onder
andere dié van Sharon Pattinson en Andrea Strauss wat albei die rekord
van M Smulders in die 400 meter verbeter het wat sedert 1979 op die
rekord-boeke staan. Andrea Strauss slaan altesaam drie rekords met haar
100m, 400m en 400m hekkies en Marion-Ann Duvenhage (100m hekkies en 400m
hekkies) en Sharon Pattinson (100m en 400m) twee elk. Ander rekordhouers
is Benri Marais (90m hekkies), Sarel Prinsloo (hoogspring), Sonique
Fourie (3 000m), Paul Viljoen (400m hekkies), Anton Ackermann (gewigstoot)
en Japie Olivier (gewigstoot). KHS se vier Victor en Victrix Ludorums
is: Franja du Plessis (junior), André Esterhuizen (junior) en Tazmin
Brits (senior) en Steyn Kriel (senior). Die plaaslike Inter-atletiek
vind plaas op 18 Februarie by die Harry Oppenheimer Stadion.
