LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

A false sense of security?

I am not instinctively negative. I tend to see the positive in most situations. While it's never enough, Rotary Clubs and other sister service organizations do touch lives in a positive way. This they achieve with limited resources be it a wheelchair, a warm meal, or a warm blanket on a cold winter's night. These are points of light that go some way to making a difference to those less fortunate. And I take hope from this.
What dented my somewhat sanguine spirit was while addressing a group of Round Table ladies on fly-fishing last weekend. Round Table was having their area conference at a local resort on the Vaal River. 'Would I be prepared to do a talk on fly-fishing for the ladies while the men were busy with their conference?' 'Sure only a pleasure'.
Fly-fishing can get quite complex so I decided that I would limit my presentation to a few basic topics a little history; some fly-tying; elementary tackle requirements; the dynamics of casting; and lastly, the real thing, fly-fishing.

I thought most of it went well. The odd girl tried her hand at tying a fly. I was quite impressed at the outcome, considering that this was the first time any of them had been at a tyer's vice. The casting proved a little more tricky, with some managing to keep the line airborne for a while.

It was the fly-fishing that was the issue. The Vaal River had been in the news of late regarding sewage spills and other contaminates. What do I do? don't tell them and hope for the best! Or do I tell them and let them decide? I decided on the latter as being the right course of action. 'Any of you watch Carte Blanche a few weeks ago?' 'Yes', came the near unanimous reply. Right there and then it was decided that there wouldn't be any venturing into the water. I was particularly saddened, not so much by the ladies not wanting to fish, but by the fact that the condition of the water was the determining factor.

And against this backdrop I am expected to be positive and optimistic and display a sense of national pride. The previous week, while flipping through the channels, I came across this guy who was over the moon about the state of South Africa. While I was taken by his obvious jingoism he had all the facts and figures on why I should be a proud South African. Well I would like to be a proud South African. A clean Vaal River would make me, for one, a proud South African.

This mighty river is the very lifeblood for many people of this country. She is a national asset belonging to all South Africans. Are we as citizens not entitled to expect that something as vital as water, on which we all depend, should be kept as pristine as possible?

With voting season upon us I can almost hear the political rhetoric: 'We had other priorities which had to be dealt with first. Potable water is now on our to do list.' Please spare me the diatribe.

Or have we become banal about what is happening around us? That it's okay to have a polluted river flow by us? It's okay that one day there wont be any fishes left to catch? Che Sera Sera (what will be, will be).

I am pleased that the condition of the Vaal River has not fallen entirely on deaf ears. There is a voluntary, non-profit organization known as SAVE, acronym for: Save the Vaal Environment. Their stated objective is: 'To protect and maintain the environmental integrity of the Vaal River and its environs for current and future generations . . .' Please visit their website at: www.save.org.za They are going to need all the support they can get. Taking on Big Brother is a tough ask. Getting back to the T.V. programme, I often find myself (possibly I'm naïve) being swept by the sheer strength of a person's personality. This guy was a disciple for South Africa. Good for him! We need disciples. Buy we also need to be realistic. There are plenty of tell-tale signs that all is not all honkey-dory in sunny South Africa. I like the term that Alan Greenspan coined, when he became concerned with the overheating of the American economy during the I.T. bubble of the 1990's. Share prices were escalating at unprecedented rates. Clearly this could not go on indefinitely and he suggested that sooner or later something was going to give. The irrational exuberance, according to Greenspan, could not be maintained.

Similarly, I wouldn't like our spin-doctors, who are on healthy doses ofI, to infect all of us all with varying degrees of myopia.

The bottom line is that we have problems. Let's admit to them and find remedies.

Right now all I want is that I get invited back (next year maybe?) and complete what I set out to do - show some Round Table ladies how to catch yellowfish on the Vaal with a fly-rod.

Chat again next week.

NW behind Bafana Bafana

The call by Premier Edna Molewa to the people of the North West to wear Bafana Bafana jerseys on Friday received an overwhelming and enthusiastic response from public servants. Staff from the Provincial Legislature stole the show as everyone, without exception, put on the Bafana Bafana jersey.
Ga-Rona Building complex, which houses the Legislature and government departments, was turned into a sea of yellow as public servants demonstrated their loyalty and support to our national team. The call by Premier Molewa is intended to raise maximum awareness around the forthcoming Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup and rally the nation behind our national team.
