LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN
Over lunch
My son Craig was down last weekend for a visit. So together with my
friend Frankie de Freitas we agreed on lunch at one of the local
restaurants. Restaurants, unlike libraries are where people chat. We
just happened to chat about confidence schemes.
Now we all know something about schemes and scams. Some even did (maybe
still are) the rounds in good ol' Klerksdorp.
I mentioned that Bernard Madoff was due to appear in court over an
alleged Ponzi scheme that he had masterminded.
To get some perspective, this scam involves around U.S. 50 billion.
Trust me there are some upset investors right now.
What goes into the creation of a confidence scheme? At its very basic
there are three elements:
1) 'This opportunity affords you a great return for very little
investment.'
2) 'Don't tell anyone, keep it to yourself.'
3) 'Sign now; this opportunity will never come again.'
Taken a little further, and this was given to me by one of our marketing
manager's 'Google it'. A legit offering to the public will be on Google.
If not, stay away from it.
A Ponzi scheme is named after Charles Ponzi, an immigrant to the United
States in 1903. While his name might sound soft and cuddly, his scam was
not. It is noteworthy that there is a significant difference between a
Ponzi scheme and a pyramid scheme. In the former there is only one
operator who interacts with investors. A pyramid scheme is multi-layered
were success is dependant on additional agent recruitment.
In both cases 'returns' are paid to investors either from their own
money or from money belonging to subsequent investors. Either way they
are not paid from profits, as there are no investments made in the
traditional sense. It's just one big round-about with cash coming in and
cash flowing out, albeit in lesser quantities. The scam operators also
have to live you know. Ponzi got involved with international postal
reply coupons (IRC's). Quite simply what he did was to send people's
money abroad; purchase the IRC's; send the IRC's back to the U.S.A.;
redeem (cash in) the IRC's for a higher value. In finance this is known
as arbitrage. In itself arbitrage is not illegal people use differing
exchange rates to achieve a profit (or loss). However Ponzi skimmed the
system and started pocketing the lion's share for himself. This, coupled
with the fact that he himself was not investing in his own scheme got
the attention of the authorities. By the time federal agents struck,
Ponzi had taken in US 15 million from the public (a lot of money back in
1920). He was sentenced to five years in a federal prison.
Bernard Madoff, a previous non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ Stock
Market, however functioned on an entirely different level. By the way
NASDAQ stands for: National Association of Securities Dealers Automated
Quotations. He targeted the world's elite including Larry King and
Stephen Spielberg.
For over a decade Madoff managed to keep his scam flourishing. Other
than the United States, he had clients in Europe, Asia and Brazil. How
did he manage to keep it going so long? It is said that a rising tide
lifts all ships. During the good times of rising stock prices, nobody
cares too much. 2008 was not your normal rising tide in stock markets.
Last year saw some serious corrections in stock prices. Some of Madoff's
investor's did the unthinkable they asked for their money back. Some US
7 billion of it. He could not repay, and serious cracks started showing.
In these schemes there is this common denominator don't ask for your
capital back.
The other is the speak dazzling language: 'hedge futures trading',
'high-yield investment programs' and 'off-shore investment'. Here was a
respected Wall Street doyen dealing with the crème-de-la-crème of the
world: 'Bernie knows what he is doing. No need to verify what he says.'
I imagine this must have been the kind of talk over cocktails in the
penthouse or on the yacht.
Strangely enough as far back as 1999, someone did notice that something
was wrong. A fund manager, and forensic examiner Harry Markopolis, said
in a memo to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) that
it was mathematically impossible for Madoff to have generated the
returns that he had. The S.E.C. did a superficial investigation and were
satisfied that there was nothing wrong. Something like the Titanic she
was unsinkable, remember? The U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett says that
he does not invest in 'something that he does not understand'.
From the research I have done, Madoff's scam was run more or less along
the following lines:
• He always targeted the rich. Those with connections to country clubs.
• The financial statements (investment reports) that were sent to
investors were falsified. There were consistent returns of between 10%
and 15% over the decade with very little exposure to risk.
• The investors were 'encouraged' to reinvest their 'profits' and were
threatened with being banned from future investments if money was
withdrawn.
• These wealthy investors only told other wealthy friends about how well
they were doing. These friends (not wanting to be left out) then
thronged to Madoff and asked (begged!) to invest their money.
• He was very selective about whom he allowed to invest with him. Only
large initial investments were permissible and then only on condition
that no one ask him about his investment strategy.
Obviously he could not manage it all on his own. He used a comfortable
coterie of family members to assist him. Although not implicated at this
stage his brother acted as compliance officer and his two sons and a
niece also worked for him.
This arrangement enabled Madoff's firm to act collectively as
stockbroker, administrator, valuator, risk manager and custodian of the
investments.
The reader might well ask how Madoff got away with it for so long. I
guess it has to do with that lesser side of our humanity greed. Sadly
those who invested in Madoff futures are now looking at a bleak
financial future.
It might do well to remember that age-old maxim: 'If it's too good to be
true, it probably is.'
I wouldn't be surprised if a new word finds it's way into the English
language Madoffed. If you aren't too happy with someone, you can tell
him to get Madoffed.
Chat again next week.
Fabulous Fusing'Four'
Klerksdorp played host to the first ever Fusing Dance Workshop this
weekend at the Rio Casino Convention Resort where dancers from Northern
Cape, Free State and Gauteng joined with the North West talent in a
breath taking experience of note.
David Matamela, Ash Searle, Jeanette Ziady and Di Ross were the fabulous
four choreographers who demonstrated, taught and inspired each session
with professionalism that we have only now come to know. It was clear
that to achieve any greatness in dancing one would have to have at least
three years of technical training in some form or another.
The defined moves of Hip Hop were certainly an eye opener to all the
dancers, as many perceive hip-hop incorrectly. Di Ross explained that it
is a forever changing style, while in keeping to basic moves, it is set
to modern trends and outdates yearly. To my mind this was an awesome
exhibit of perfect 'street wise' procedures that was experienced at the
workshop.
Strength, creative and clear movements of the Afro Fusion, a new style
for all the dancers made it very challenging to those who had no ballet
background. David Matamela made his classes especially interesting,
ensuring each one received teaching at their level of understanding.
It was the grace, gentleness and poise of Jeanette Ziady that took 'men
and made them dancers'. For most dancers contemporary is one of the most
challenging genres, as full body and mind control is needed to perform
the perfect stage picture grasping the audience in the telling of a
story by body movements.
The cute, funky, delightful personality of Ash Searle was evident in his
choreography 'Hairspray'; "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" the
hit song Napoleon XIV; and a breath taking excerpt of SA Chicago
Broadway done with the teachers, was a sure hit of the workshop. The
final open session for teachers and seniors was a combined choreographed
Tango, by Jeanette, David and Ash to end Fusing Dance at its best.
Global Dance Conventions had lucky draw winners - lst prize laptop
computer to Ashley Olson from Parys; 2nd prize R1500 Musica Vouchers to
Carisa Maré from Hartbeesfontein; and 3rd prize of R1000 worth of body
toning aids went to Lisa Coetzee from Lichtenburg. Kaleidoscope Events
would like to thank Rio Casino Convention Resort; the people that
supported the auditions, dinners for our celebrates, printing of the
programme and advertising.
RIO
Cabaret Extravaganza EYE CANDY FOR MEN & WOMEN
Three Dynamic Vocalists; Strong line-up dancers; Spectacular Costumes
and props:
These are just some of the things mentioned that this excellent show had
to offer. Yourcity and other media had the privilege to watch the show
when Rio Casino took us to Emperors Palace to experience this
electrifying show.
The Jubilee Rio Cabaret Extravaganza, a Tyrone Watkins production
celebrating 10 sensational years of entertainment in the Peermont Group
and is a spectacular piece of art that features a bevy of dazzling
dancers and three multi-talented singers.
Gravity defying speciality strength act and the angelic net flying solo
speciality act is just two of the amazing acts you can experience. Then
2008 British Open Professional Invitational Exhibition Champions, Craig
Smith and Natalie Woolfe, and their pas de deux incorporates spectacular
lift work through strength and agility, with the aesthetic beauty and
fluidity of classic dance. World Exhibition Dance Champions, Nic Dawson
and Cherese Black then take to the stage to perform an incredible
bungee-trapeze flying adage, with true acrobatic artistry.
The three incredibly talented singers who shares the stage with this
great dancers is Desiree Hennings, former member of the girl band “Shine
4” joined by dynamic husband and wife team Kurt Michaels (Coca Cola
Popstars winners “101”) and Tia Reece (recording artist in her own
right).
This extravaganza is coming to our very own town from 6 9 April and is
there no need to drive all the way to Johannesburg to experience this
amazing cabaret. This is a must see cabaret and should not be missed.
Only at the Escapades Theatre at Rio Hotel Casino Convention Resort.
Fusing Dance visits Triest
It was a very special Friday 13th for Triest as Di Ross, David Matamela
and Ash Searle from Fusing Dance Workshop joined Lany and Inge Olivier
and gave them a specially choreographed Hip Hop session that will be
used for their special performance at the Rio Matlosana Festival later
in the year.
Lany Olivier to coach the Technical Officials at the University of the
Free State
One of our qualified Technical Officials in International Men's Hockey
in South Africa, Lany Olivier, was called on to coach the Technical
Officials at the University of the Free State during the Men's
Internationals games held in Bloemfontein 9 14 March.
Mickey Gordon an ex PUKKE Sports Director was instrumental in making the
UFS's Hockey venue one of the newest in South Africa and for sure one
that will be busy the whole year through.
Lany was fortunate to meet the Russian team and coach Igor Shishkov and
his wife, giving them a tour of Bloemfontein in some free time. Then
there were some old favorites Olympic Gold winners 2008 Germany and
Jochen Heimpel the team Manager as well as Greg Clarke and our SA Boys.
The games were very well organized and the SA u21 were invited to do
some basic fitness and training along side these top sides. SA Men's
team had a good week, growing stronger with every game.
Scores are available on Facebook Men's International Hockey.

Home: Safety
Tips / Safety Awareness at Home
Fences/Walls
A high fence around the house with lockable gates is much safer than a
high wall due to the advantage of the improved visibility it provides.
The primary aim of the fence is to make access/intrusion difficult and
to allow dogs to move freely around the house.
Ensure that your gates are locked at all times and that the keys cannot
be reached easily and are not lying around uncontrolled.
Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door as well as
burglar proofing covering all windows, are recommended.
The following devices prevent easy access:
Window bars
Security doors
Security gates
Razor wire
Additional locking devices on doors
Strengthening of doors
Peepholes in the doors
Safety chains to doors
Intercom system between the home and gate, front door or garage
Alarm Systems
An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can
act as an effective deterrent.
In the rural environment a siren/alarm on the roof that can be heard
over a long distance and that can be activated by means of a
switch/panic button in the house, is recommended.
A few switches/panic buttons in different rooms of the house should
preferably be installed.
An alarm must also have the capability to warn the occupants of any
intrusion into the house.
Examples of alarm systems:
Mechanical and/or electrical (purchased types)
Improvised systems
Threaded tins
Threaded pieces of iron
Gravel on window pains, pathways or around the home
Obstacles that can make a noise when moved
Biological Systems:
Dogs
Geese
Ostriches
Security Lights
Security lights on the outside of the house improve the physical
protection of a house, farm or smallholding.
The lights must be directed away from the house and must allow the
occupants to use the windows without being observed from outside.
Be aware of possible shadows and blind spots.
Safety Precautions
Ensure that all doors are locked at all times, and that windows are
closed when you are not at home.
Large dogs serve as a deterrent. At least one dog should be trained to
sleep inside the house.
If you leave your residence, inform your family/ neighbours of your
intended destination, time you expect to return and the route you will
be driving, especially if you reside in a rural area.
Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks, ladders, etc that can be
used in an attack, are locked away when you do not use them.
Vary your daily routine.
Get into the habit of not immediately falling asleep after switching off
the lights.
Remain awake for a while.
You should not be visible in the bedroom from the outside when you are
asleep.
Always keep a torch nearby at night and when you use it, ensure that you
do not give away your position.
If you are unsure about the security status of your home after returning
from work/a visit, eg your dogs do not come to the gate, do not enter
your home.
Contact your neighbour to assist you in securing your home.
Identify relatively safe places of refuge, ie: bathroom, toilet or
storeroom.
The fewer windows and doors these rooms have, the better.
Involve employees as they are part of the family/team.
Employees must be involved in maintaining security on an equal footing.
Report suspicious behaviour and information to the South African Police
Service.
Clear the areas around the gates of bushes and other hiding places.
Take photographs of all employees.
It could be to your advantage to identify them, if required.
Remunerate your employees when useful information is provided that
contribute to the prevention of crime.
Do not employ casual workers without a reference.
Keep copies of all your employees - Identity Documents (ID's).
Ensure that you have a good relationship with your neighbours so that
you will be in a good position to support and help each other.
Access and Key Control
Do not allow strangers on your premises or in your house without having
properly identifying the person, especially at night.
Implement proper key control measures.
Identify keys by means of codes instead of indicating in writing on
labels to which gate/door access can be gained.
Keys to the safe must be kept on the person.
Never hide any keys in traditional places, such as in pot plants or
under doormats.
Keys in the keyhole on the inside of the front or back door should be
turned to avoid easy removal.
Never allow strangers to handle keys or look at key numbers.
Change locks when keys are lost.
Insert barring devices in door locks.
Remove keys from doors when leaving.
Communication
There should be two systems for alternative back up:
Telephone
Cellular phone
Have the telephone installed where it is easily accessible from anywhere
in the house.
Inform your children not to give an indication that adult supervision is
not available when they answer the phone.

Wessie-ouers hou POLVY DERBY
5cm. Soos Paula sou sê:” 'n Wedloop met 'n bietjie JE NE SAIS QUOI.” Dit
het omtrent sports veroorsaak. Vanjaar se wenner is Mev. Celia van Eeden
wat haar opponente los hande weggehardloop het. Mev. van Eeden ontvang
'n prys vir 'n totale “Make over” vir hierdie ongelooflike oorwinning.
aanteken, ontvang R2 500, terwyl 100 lopies in die SA “A”/Engeland-wedstryd
R2 000 beteken. 'n Honderdtal in 'n Pro 20-wedstryd sal 'n kolwer R1 000
R500-geskenkbewys, as 100ste toeskouer, ontvang.
Naked Boys Cause
Havoc in the Streets
Recently some guys of Klerksdorp decided to make more of their night and
to the big amusement of others, they ran completely naked through the
streets where they passed Coobah as well as Spur.
The police heard about this incident and went after them. The police
caught them and the had some explaining to do.....
At this stage no one knows whether they have been arrested or charged
with anything, but they definitely made some of the resident laugh with
the guts they’ve shown by running naked.
Wessies presteer in Super 8

Bekker gespeel.
Die hokkie-bokkies moes hul man staan teen 'n paar sterk spanne hierdie
week.
