LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN
Risk
Funny think risk. As I go about my business I hear more and more about
the fact that people didn't know about the risks involved in this or
that investment. During the good times when returns were stellar, few
concerned themselves with the risks associated with a particular
investment. Now that financial and other markets have corrected
themselves, all and sundry are crying foul. Risk is a fundamental
element of almost any free-market system, and free-markets work in
cycles. Right now we are in a trough ie. markets are down. This is not
necessarily a bad situation to be in. Difficult as it may seem down is
actually good at times. For instance, right now, you can pick up good
quality shares quite cheaply. Property is also relatively cheap. On the
flipside of the same coin, now is a rough time to be selling. You may
even have to delay your retirement plans for a while. Such is the way of
markets. There is no quick-fix.
The word risk derives from the Arabic, meaning 'to seek prosperity'.
Taken further risk involves the possibility of gain or of loss. To a
greater or lesser extent we have all been exposed to risk a friend
borrows R1000 on the promise to repay you back next week (on payday!).
Next week, and the following few weeks come and go, you hear nothing.
That is risk. High risk. You stand a better chance with more mature and
sophisticated markets, such as registered stock-markets or property
markets. These are places where there are many more buyers and sellers,
where the forces of demand and supply are played out on a grander scale.
But you need to do your homework. Don't buy on the tip you heard around
the braai last weekend. That is stupid. Seek advice from stock-brokers
and qualified property consultants. You may end up paying a fee, but its
better than losing all your money.
An important element of risk is that a person must have a personal stake
in the investment. This is the stuff that has made and broken many.
Where fortunes are made and lost on the roll of a pair of dice. Where
characters are forged and shattered.
But risk is not limited to conventional investments only. The very
essence of life is steeped in risk. Each breath that we take is in
itself a miracle of life. Life, all life, has a finite quality to it.
Yet we tend to take the gift of life for granted something that we are
entitled to. But when that life is challenged, with a terminal illness
for instance, how suddenly there is a switch of focus. Nowhere was this
more poignantly portrayed than in the movie that I watched a few nights
ago - The Bucket List. The main actors, Jack Nicholson and Morgan
Freeman get diagnosed with cancer and are each given a few months to
live. Jack is a multi-millionaire and Morgan a mechanic. The rub of
story goes about the two of them making the most of what is left of
their lives. They embark on an around-the-world trip. They have a car
race; do a parachute jump; visit the pyramids; go on an African safari;
visit the Taj Mahal. They decided to throw caution to the wind and take
a few risks and live life to the full. Jack even tried to arrange a high
class lady for Morgan. But Morgan politely refused he was married and
faithful to his wife. Morgan was the first to go Jack did the eulogy,
during which (my paraphrasing) he thanked Morgan for showing him how to
live. It wasn't about wealth or status. It was about what mattered most
life.
Last Sunday I attended the evening service at the local Methodist
Church. It wasn't your usual hymn-and-a-thing. There was a lively band
ably led by Rob Krause and Rheinholdt Kade. What caught my attention
however was the dance number done by some ladies. They were dressed like
the Oracles of Delphi satin dresses accompanied with flowing lilac
organza. I don't know if it has happened before, but they danced in the
church. I imagine some would be uncomfortable with such an item. Maybe
even find it offensive. I didn't. Here were some ladies who decided to
do something unconventional and express their faith by dancing. They
took their faith to the edge and risked it a little. Good for them.
What I do find unacceptable, however, is when risk is taken to the point
where people's lives are endangered. I am not talking here about me
jumping out of a plane. That's me taking a risk. I am referring to the
general disregard drivers in this town have towards respect for the rule
of law. A stop sign is what it says STOP!. It's not slow down, yield or
totally ignore the sign. It's, stop the vehicle, so that it doesn't
move. These signs have been put there for a reason for our collective
safety. This level of risk tolerance is dangerous and doesn't belong in
our society.
Chat again next week.
Van
Huyssteen goes an extra mile with Junkyard
“For me, it is one of the nicest things to do - to plan a project, to
execute it and to see it being implemented. To any engineer, it is
wonderful to experience this.”
These are the words of Mr. Piet van Huyssteen, lecturer in electronic
engineering, regarding concerning his involvement in the Siemens Cyber
Junkyard competition over the past three years. This sought-after
competition has been presented since 2003, and the NWU Puk won it in
2006 and 2008.
Van Huyssteen says the competition is extremely popular among students
and annually they have to turn away many who wish to participate. A team
of six third-year engineering students are chosen from the mechanical,
electric, electronic and computer engineering courses.
This team is involved from the very beginning in building the project
and long hours are dedicated to it. Van Huyssteen says shortly before
the deadline date the team's dedication is tested to the limit with some
nights when they get no sleep at all, while their academic work may also
not be interrupted.
He says the competition brings together practice and academics where
participants are introduced to the industry. During the crowning
occasion of the competition they meet business people and can even walk
off with a job offer.
The competition is sponsored by Siemens and is aimed at providing
industrial electronic equipment to apply process control. Festo supplies
pneumatic equipment which controls air pressure. These companies send
out tenders annually to participate in a specific project.
Van Huyssteen says he helped the students in 2006 to build a machine
that pieces together key holders. The next year they built a model to do
process flow calculations and last year their automatic coffee machine
won.
Members of the winning team receive huge prizes at Siemens, 21 days of
advanced training in any of their courses, as well as a huge amount of
engineering equipment for the University.
Following his studies, Van Huyssteen designed systems for industries in
electric and electronic engineering at Pretoria Technikon for twelve
years, and also developed hard and software for the industry. He says
this experience comes in handy for him when planning and executing the
Cyber Junkyard competition.

YAWA COMMITS TO AGGRESIVE INTERVENTION MEASURES TO IMPROVE MUNICIPAL
AUDIT OUTCOMES
The North West Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing
is to adopt aggressive intervention measures in order to realise
disclaimer free municipal audit outcomes for the 2008/09 financial year
says MEC Howard Yawa. The MEC made the undertaking at the 2007/08
Municipal Audit Outcomes presented by the Audit General, Terence
Nombembe in Mafikeng today. The report reveals that at least four
municipalities in the province, i.e. Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and
Bojanala Platinum District Municipalities, Molopo and Moses Kotane local
municipalities have managed to sustain their unqualified audit reports
year on year.Three municipalities, i.e. Rustenburg Local Municipality,
Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipalities also
moved from a disclaimer audit opinion in 2006/07 to a qualified opinion
in 2007/08. The Auditor General has attributed the slight improvement on
the results to a number of factors, such as strengthened internal
controls, especially proper record keeping and management, as well as
the usage of consultants to assist municipality to compile financial
statements. Nombembe, said in order to maintain sustainability,
municipalities needed to put in place stringent record management system
that will allow for easy retrieval during audit processes. He said the
fact that senior officials are not available during audits,
non-prioritisation of action plans to address prior year audit findings
as well as capacity and financial and accounting skills, were some of
the factors that contributed to the deteriorating audit outcomes. He
advised municipalities to share best practices in order to turn-around
the situation and reduce the number of disclaimers in the province.
Ten municipalities, i.e. Moretele, Greater Taung, Lekwa Teemane, Naledi,
Mafikeng, Ramotshere Moiloa, Ratlou, Tswaing, City of Matlosana and
Ventersdorp local Municipalities have remained with a disclaimer
opinion, while the only municipality that moved from an adverse opinion
in the 2007/08 financial year to a disclaimer is Tlokwe City Council.
While committing his department to continued support to municipalities
for them to meet their constitutional obligations, MEC Yawa appealed for
key stakeholders in local government to hold hands to improve financial
management.
