I want my tombstone to read: This is far from over…..

I wouldn't mind being stuck in an elevator with: Lady Gaga!

In three words I am: Super crazy entertaining.

If I had a million rand to spare I would: Go shopping with my friends!

I live in Klerksdorp because: This is home.

The first thing I would save from a house fire is: My clothes lol!

My nickname is: Marz

I love my job because: I can tell people what’s hot or not!

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

Whose idea is it anyhow?

It's funny how one latches on to things. It doesn't only have to be big or great things like going out to buy a house or a motorcar. Maybe it was advertising seduction that led to the purchase. Or good old-fashioned buyers itch. 'Die geld brand 'n gat in sy sak', my late grandfather used to say. These items leave capacious gaps in one's banking account, and often lead to buyer's remorse later on. Still there comes a time when you need to move to a new house your family is getting bigger. Or that car is becoming unreliable it could leave you in the lurch far from home.

People also latch onto smaller things as well buying a certain line of perfume, or becoming obsessed with trying to make friends with someone.

With the buying of the perfume its quite simple if you can afford it, get it.

Trying to break into a new friendship is a little more exacting. You need to tap into something somewhat deeper (some believe you can buy friendship with money, you can't). Seneca, the famous Roman thinker and writer said, 'Money never made anyone rich'. You need that connect social status, intellect, similar interests and so on, in order to create and make lasting friendships.

Of late I have noticed (and latched onto) how people come up with ideas and then proceed to keep them. I suppose the phenomena has been around for a long time. Its just that I have heard, 'But it was my idea', more than once over the last few weeks. It doesn't matter whether it was to start a club; create a recipe or give rise to an investment syndicate. There is the same refrain, 'It was my idea'. These then mutate into, 'It's my club'; it's my recipe and, 'It's my syndicate'.
Two words spring to mind with this kind of thinking and behaviour: myopea and solipsis. The first is probably understood by most and means shortsighted. However I am referring to shortsighted in the figurative sense. The second word solipsis, is less often used and refers to the philosophical theory that only self exists or can be known.
I want to deal with both concepts as one. There is, to my mind, a definite interplay between the two.

For the sake of expediency, let's look at starting a club. I wake up one morning with this bright idea that I believe that we should have a mayfly club. Why? Well because I believe that mayflies are under threat and should they become extinct it could have serious consequences for the food chain. I am on fire with the idea, and share it with my wife. She frowns quizzically she doesn't fly-fish and doesn't have the foggiest about mayflies. But that doesn't deter me. I phone my fly-fishing buddies and excitedly share my idea with them. 'Sure Collie, lets meet informally and discuss it'.

So I prepare for this informal gathering. I get a venue. I draw up the agenda. At the meeting I do all the talking and I suggest that we start a club. 'What shall we call it? I ask? Again me, 'Why not call it The Great North West Endangered Mayfly Species Club?' (In all humility I thought of this thought provoking and catchy name before the meeting, but had to wait patiently for the right moment to suggest it). Anyhow, that out of the way, I suggest a constitution, a committee, our bankers . . . . . and so on and so on.
What is wrong with the above scenario? Quite simply it's all about me, my, I. But not to hurt my feelings, the guys go along with it. Because they were not afforded an opportunity to buy into the process from the outset, or were given joint ownership the idea will fly for a while, and then die a slow death. And then everybody shrugs their shoulders in disbelief, 'But Collie it was such a good idea'. By this time, I am blaming everybody else for the demise of the Great North West Endangered Mayfly Species Club. Cant blame myself, now can I? Pride wont let me, 'Sweetheart, why couldn't they see that it was a great idea. So much could have been achieved. I am not appreciated for what I do.'

Maybe it was a great idea. Maybe it could have worked. But because of my not letting others share in the ownership of the idea, it died.

I am not referring to ideas that are capable of patent and enjoy the protection of the law.

When you want to start a club or something along similar lines, you have sell the idea to others. That, according to my reckoning, implies a transfer of your idea to others. By them buying into your idea, they obtain a shared degree of ownership. You invariably need others to assist in the running of the club. But I (we) want to maintain control. And therein lies the danger and the threat. Not only to me, but to others as well. Subtle discontent gives way to outright confrontation, where egos get in the way and lifelong enmity, between otherwise good friends, now pervades the landscape.

This curse of control seems to stem from some deep-seated fear that if we aren't in control, that somehow or other we are deficient in some way. This mindset leads to loneliness and rejection.

Some years ago I was listening to a psychologist talking on the radio about fear and how we cover-up our fears through control. She used a simple example: before buying your next pair of shoes, plan to give an old pair away. Think about it it's not the buying of the new shoes that is the issue. It's the giving away of the old pair that's the problem. And at the heart of the problem is the loss, or perceived loss, of control by giving something away. Possibly by giving something away, we are giving something of ourselves away. Bette Middler voices it so fittingly in The Rose, 'it's the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live'.

Until and unless we learn the art of giving of ourselves to others, great ideas will end up on the ash-heap of lost dreams and society will be that much poorer for it. Do we not have a duty to give to others? How else can society progress? How else can the world, which is all we have, move forward?

So, again, one morning I wake up with this great idea on how to protect mayflies. I decide to share this idea with others and let them buy in. The idea is no longer mine, but ours. We all more forward, and we all benefit.
Who knows, for my efforts, maybe a mayfly will get named after me. Nice, but not important. Talking about that, do we really need monuments to ourselves. I remember my mom taking us for picnics in the Cape Town Gardens. The place was (is) spiked with monuments and statues. We were quite small, but something always enthused my curiosity why did the pigeons have to always sit, and do their thing, on the poor guy's [the statue's] head? Do pigeons know something that we don't? Something to mull over.

Chat again next week.

Council declares war on potholes

The City of Matlosana's Infrastructure and Utilities department will stop at nothing in making sure that the concerns over the increase of potholes in the city gets an immediate attention.

In its bid to declare war on potholes, the department has sourced out services of 86 new general workers who will assist with the patching of potholes.

The municipality has also advertised a vehicle tender which will ensure that employees are sent to attention-seeking areas with speed. The municipality is also busy purchasing concrete cutter, wackers and pedestrian rollers for easy work than the old conventional (pick and shovel) for the shaping and repairing of roads. Presently, the municipal workers are working overtime, including on weekends to address major routes of the city but due to the recent rains, the Council have resorted to the use of the soil crete to temporarily close the potholes during wet conditions as it is unwise to close them with cold bag premix or hot asphalt.

Also advertised is the emergency patching contract to assist with the proper patching of potholes around the entire city.

The Council intends acquiring the services of more than 2 service providers to speed up this process. The Council has also sent a request for budget adjustment to come up with a long term solution of rehabilitating and resealing most damaged roads due to bad weather conditions.

DR. KENNETH KAUNDA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY DONATES FUNDS TO HAITI

The Executive Mayor of the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Councillor Boitumelo Moloi has joined the rising number of Good Samaritans after committing funds totaling R50 000 towards disaster relief funds to Haiti.

This happens following Mayor Moloi's pledge on SABC 2 Morning Live telethon on 28 January that the District would be donating the Funds to assist the government of Haiti which has been left with at-least 150 000 fatalities after an earthquake that struck more than two-weeks ago.
Although the District is aware of the vulnerability of its communities, particularly in the recent floods, the Mayor expressed the Haiti Disaster as a tragedy that requires help from all corners of the globe.

The Executive Mayor also challenges all able business-people around the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District to assist in any way they can towards the Haiti Disaster Fund.

The fund's bank account number has been announced as follows: 923 884 4487 at the Absa Branch Code 632005.

Velour in the face of violence

In late November last year, residents of AngloGold Ashanti's Vaal River Village learnt with shock and dismay that the apparent safety of their peaceful environment had been violated.

Fleeing after an armed robbery at Itireleng Residence had gone wrong, three suspects crashed their get-away vehicle and charged into a home where they held three people hostage for several hours. It was a high-stress situation of which the outcome could have been much different if it had not been for the valour shown by a passerby and members of the company's Security Department.

Even though the incident was traumatic for the victims, the controlled way in which it was resolved proved to be a testament to AngloGold Ashanti Security's determination to prevent its people and assets from being exposed to the risks of criminal activity. It also proved that criminals can be thwarted if ordinary, law-abiding people become more vigilant and work with crime prevention units to make sure that thugs are brought to justice.

The hostage drama started to unfold shortly before lunchtime on Friday, 27 November 2009 when three men drove a light delivery vehicle (LDV) through the steel rollup door that leads to the delivery bay of the Teba Bank at the residence. They held the tellers at gunpoint while raking in a substantial amount of cash. At about the same time, electrician, Hans Bal noticed a suspect vehicle at the bank and alerted senior security officer, Jan Labuschagne who was on duty in the control room. Jan immediately dispatched the Security reaction units and a high-speed pursuit followed. The suspects fired several shots and security officer, Nico Keys returned fire wounding one of the suspects in his upper left leg.

Trying to avoid capture, the suspects drove into Vaal River village, where they crashed and then seeked cover in one of the company houses. The South African Police Services (SAPS) was informed and working with Security personnel they acted quickly to secure the scene. The suspects surrendered when the SAPS Special Task Force arrived to take charge. All three suspects were arrested and two handguns were seized. The stolen cash was also recovered without any innocent bystander having been injured.
As could be expected, the management of Teba Bank was extremely grateful for the outcome and decided to reward the men who had bravely confronted the bank robbers. Hennie Oosthuizen, Klerksdorp branch manager of Teba Bank, handed cash rewards to Hans Bal and Nico Keys on Thursday, 21 January.

His relief was clear when mentioning that because there had been so many people in and around the residence, the bank robbery could have ended with casualties. “Even though the bank is insured against acts like these, we felt compelled to reward these men for the dangerous part they had played in apprehending the suspects,” Hennie said.

Head of Security, Pierre Victor thanked Nico and Hans, as well as other members of his team for the professional manner in which they had handled the situation. “The fact that no security personnel, SAPS members, Teba employees, bystanders or those held hostage was injured shows that safety really is your first value.

Your tremendous efforts and acute sense of observation must be commended,” he said, adding that Teba Bank deserves applause for presenting the heroes with their rewards.

HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITMENT TO FACILITATE INCREASED ACCESS TO AND AFFORDABILITY OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The 23 universities in the public South African higher education system have committed themselves to facilitating increased access to higher education and to ensure that it remains
affordable for most individuals and families.

This commitment was shared with the Ministry of Higher Education and Training at a meeting on 7 January 2010.Tuition fee increases across the sector for 2010 as a percentage of those in 2009 have been kept in the range 9-15% in line with inflationary pressures, as well as agreements and commitments within individual institutions as a result of internal consultation processes.

HESA is in the process of finalising guidelines aimed at assisting institution to arrive at affordable tuition fees whilst ensuring the maintenance of the quality of teaching and
learning; research facilities; student support and other services; and the financial sustainability of our institutions. We recognise the positive gesture from some of our institutions which have put in place a process to make provisions for financial assistance to academically deserving but needy students from their own operational budgets.

The sector has specifically committed to the following:

• Making available appropriate financial support to students who meet the relevant institutional
criteria, in order to ensure that no deserving student is denied an educational opportunity on
financial grounds;
• Expediting the processing of upfront payments in the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) so that NSFAS supported students are in a position to pay first installments of fees;
• Strengthening institutional systems for detecting early warning signals on student performance as well as mechanisms for re-directing underperforming students to other areas of study;
• Ensuring that the goal of being responsive in terms of facilitating is not by institutional inability to ensure effective collection of debt. The current student debt within the sector is in the region of R2.8 billion.
• Giving special attention to broadening access for students from Quintile 1 Schools which are located in poor communities in extremely disadvantaged rural areas of the country. Students from these schools are to get special support to enter into higher education as well as support to enhance their chances of success.

WAT IS BETER AS GENESING? VOORKOMING

Vra Dr Davis in haar boek The Secret History of the War on Cancer wat by die simposium tesame met Exclusive Books bekendgestel word.

Omtrent die boek 'The Secret History of the War on Cancer'

Sluice gates opened at Vaal Dam

Fourteen sluice gates at the Vaal Dam were opened on Thursday 28 January - the highest number of gates open at once since 1996.
Three million litres of water fled into the Vaal Dam per second and two million pour out. Incessant rains pushed the water levels above the 100% full mark, forcing officials from South Africa's Department of Water Affairs to release some of the water.
Releasing water led to flooding in surrounding areas. A few residents near the Vaal River experienced damage to their homes.

RECORD FIELD FOR DUESOUTH XTERRA BUFFELSPOORT DAM

Although the North West Province was plagued by extremely wet weather conditions on Saturday, 30 January 2010, it seemed to have no impact on South Africa's top multi-sport and lifestyle athletes when a record field of close to 1 000 competitors swarmed to the magnificent Buffelspoort Dam to test their skills at the second leg of the 2009/2010 DUESOUTH XTERRA presented by REHIDRAT®.

Dan Hugo was once again in top form to secure the individual men's title, while Susan Sloan was victorious in the individual women's category of the event.

According to Hugo, the course was extremely muddy due to the rain, but lots of fun. “Today's race was awesome and it was amazing to see how the XTERRA has grown.
Kent Horner and Charl Keet swam really well and exited the water about 25 seconds ahead of me. Although the mountain bike route was very slippery, I managed to catch them quite quickly. The course was a little shorter as it had to be adapted at the last minute due to the weather.

It was, however, still very challenging with lots of rocky, loose sections. I really enjoyed the run especially the section where we had to cross a stream. Today was a great indicator of where I am in terms of racing condition and fitness.

There is still one or two points that I need to work on before the DUESOUTH XTERRA South African finals in Grabouw.

I am really excited about the South African finals, ultimately this is the one event where I'd like to produce the goods,” says Hugo, who completed the race in an impressive time of 02hours16minutes55seconds. Kent Horner came in second, while Rob Woestenborghs of Belgium finished third.

Susan Sloan took top honours in the individual women's category of the DUESOUTH XTERRA when she crossed the finish line in 03hours02minutes44seconds.

Sylvia van Tromp came in second, while Riana de Lange finished third.

DUESOUTH XTERRA competitors had to complete a 1.5km swim, 26.5km mountain bike and 12.5km trail run, while DUESOUTH XERRA lite entrants needed to complete a 400m swim, 15.8km mountain bike and 6.3km trail run.

Participants could enter individually or in teams of three.

South African Finals - Excitement is mounting as the third and final leg of the 2009/2010 DUESOUTH XTERRA is drawing nearer.

This awe-inspiring event, which also serves as the keenly anticipated South African series final, will take place on Saturday, 20 February 2010 at the picturesque Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape).

The local series forms part of the XTERRA Global Tour and athletes will have the opportunity to qualify for the world championship final that will take place in Hawaii later this year.

The global series span more than 90 qualifying events in 13 countries and take competitors to some of the most spectacular and challenging courses around the globe.

Happy Feet All Set for 2010 U14 National Tennis Ranking

During December 2009 and January 2010 Kimberly Jean Botha of Brothers College found out exactly what it going to take over and above prayer to become one of the top ten in the country for under 14 for tennis.

To play tennis and perform on the top levels is no easy task.

The first tournament in Stellenbosch proved to be a huge tester and disappointment for Happy Feta was sent to the back draw after not qualifying for the top 32 in the platinum decision. Kimberly dealt with the disappointment and managed to win the back draw and came 33rd out of 68 entries. Next tournaments in Ronderbocsh was kinder to her. She Managed to qualify for the top draw. This was tennis at its very best, Kim played hard and managed to finish in the top 25 for this one and went to the quarter finals with her doubles partner from Durban young Amy.

After Cape Town Key Health Super 7 tournaments and a short break over new year Kimberly tackled the Gauteng Central National Championships at Ellis Park. Here Happy Feet played her heart out and lost to the no 4 seed of the tournament in the quarter finals. She played two hard games and managed to beat the number 2 seed of the tournament to get 5th position in singles and got to the semi finals in doubles. Straight after this Happy Feet challenged the no 2 in the province for the number two position but was unsuccessful.

Botha had set herself a goal to be in the top ten in the country by November 2010. This is going to take huge effort and support from her coaches, fitness trainers, family and friends.
We wish her everything of the best and hope that she is able to carry the Matlosana Magic Dream to higher levels. When Kimberly started in November 2009 she was ranked 124 in the country she is currently ranked number 60 in the country.

RAINY DAYS FOR THS

The rain did little to curb the enthusiasm of the learners of THS on 26 January.

In spite of a wet and muddy field, THS learners continued to participate in the annual Inter-house while the crowd egged them on.

Many more learners were involved in the athletics this year than in previous years; a sure sign that something positive is brewing amongst the learners.
