Fusing Dance is BACK

The 2010 workshop has a line-up so great it should not be missed. Global Dance aims to enhance all dance styles within South Africa starting the year off in Klerksdorp.

With the current exposure to dance worldwide it has become apparent that if any dancer is serious about dancing or perhaps aiming towards a career in dance that a single style will no longer be enough! Fusing Dance Workshop is an exciting opportunity to dance with the Top South African choreographers in their different styles.

Although the importance of solid technical training one receives from Studios and Schools cannot be over emphasized, it is also important to expose dancers to different dance forms.
It is essential to have an insight and a little knowledge of various dance styles available to achieve success.

Join the team of André Calitz, Kelsey Middleton, Rafick Hoosain and Ashley Searle at the Rio casino Escapades Theatre on the 19 - 21 March for the time of your life.

When I look into the mirror every morning I think: God het my perfek en mooi gemaak.

My favourite people in the world are: My Man, My Seuntjie, my Ouers en my broer.

My favourite quote is: If you don't have confidence fake it!

My Baba seuntjie wanneer hy sommer net laf is makes me laugh.

The greatest lesson life has taught me so far is: Behandel mense soos jy graag behandel wil word.

I'll do almost anything for: My Kind, my Man en my Ouers.

When I get stressed I am most likely to throw NIKS out a window.

I want my tombstone to read: Finominale MA, Vrou, Dogter, Suster en Vriendin.

I wouldn't mind being stuck in an elevator with: : My Moeder, ons kan ure gesels sommer oor enige ding.

In three words I am: Betroubaar, Eerlik, Opreg.

If I had a million rand to spare I would: Belê in eiendom.

I live in Klerksdorp because: Pragtige dorp en Fantasiese Mense.

My nickname is: Tawwe Tellie (my Man noem my dit)

I love my job because:Ek maak 'n verskil in mense se lewens.

LIFE AND TIMES WITH COLLIN

Peace in our time

Anyone who was around in 1938, and can still remember, will recall the newspaper headline: Peace in our time. It goes back to 1938 when Neville Chamberlain [English Prime Minister] returned from Germany brandishing a piece of paper saying somewhat proudly, that he had secured peace for England. He, Hitler, Mussolini and Daladier of France had hammered out an agreement, known as The Munich Agreement which promised that Germany and England would never go to war again. In this Chamberlain was sorely mistaken Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia in March 1939, ignoring the Munich Agreement. Mussolini, not to be outdone, sent his Fascist army into Albania.

The dark clouds of war over Europe, had blackened even further. The path to war was now firmly cemented, with Hitler, its chief architect.

This misjudging of Hitler's intentions was to cost Chamberlain the premiership and to catapult Churchill to the forefront of British politics. How could Chamberlain have been so wrong? After all, the drumbeat of war was reverberating all over Europe. And what of his intelligence network? The information being fed him must have indicated that something was amiss. Germany was busy arming herself to the teeth. And no one noticed?

Possibly the receding tide of war after the Treaty of Versailles had lulled not only Chamberlain, but others as well, into believing that it would never happen again. That belle-epoch period that pervaded society after the Victorian Era and briefly interrupted by the First World War, had taken hold again, and all was well, once again. It is when we are at our most complacent, that we are most vulnerable.

Still, Chamberlain could be forgiven for wanting to believe that peace was possible. The human pendulum, will from time to time, be swung to its extremes. But it will always endeavour to centre itself at a state of rest a place of peace.
What got me thinking about Chamberlain and peace was a recent Rotary article titled: 'Is peace possible?'. It was a very informative article to which I will return to again later. In part, it's this that I like about Rotary. There is so much good that Rotary does in the world our world. Yet I find a lot of misperception about Rotary. Mostly this misperception is based on ignorance and apathy. Sadly, at times, this leads to anathema and feelings of hostility towards Rotarians and the Rotary Organization. I have even heard that we are into vodooism. For the record, and I have mentioned this before, we are a non-religious, non-political organization. It is precisely because of this that our reach is so wide. It is an organization of ordinary people endeavouring to achieve the extraordinary in an ever-wanting world. Unfettered by the chains of religion and politics, our members are able to bring healing to the sick; literacy to the unread; comfort to those in distress; and yes, peace in hostile regions. And in return, yes there is a return a certain knowledge that we have made society a better place to live in. Is this not the common tenet of most of the major religions? We also have some fun along the way. Hopefully through membership we are able to produce better citizens. You are also encouraged to think beyond yourself.
But we are not cocooned in some ideal environment where everything is ship-shape and ready to go at a moment's notice. We are dealing with a resource that is vibrant. I am talking about humankind, that species that is as fickle as the weather around us. Replete as well, with fault lines.

The following incident will hopefully serve to illustrate what I am talking about. A short while ago I was fly-fishing with some friends. Included in the party was a missionary. I got chatting to him about the work we do in Rotary. Specifically I told him about a wheelchair project that we were involved in and that should he identify a worthy recipient, to let me know. Yes there was someone. Time passed I forgot about the discussion until I met with him [the missionary] recently. I reminded him of the wheelchair. Somewhat hesitantly he told me that person did not want a wheelchair from Rotary because he had had a fallout with a Rotarian at some time previously.

I don't know the background to what had happened but here was a person, obviously in need, yet because of pride (wounded or otherwise), as best as I could discern, did not want assistance. And nothing was going to change his (or her) stance.
This is not just about Rotary. This is about our parochial nature. We all have fallouts with our neighbours, our relatives, our friend and colleagues. Sometimes we come to blows, most times not. But we always let our feelings be known. We never speak to that person again. And like a cancer, it eats away at us. We are never at peace. Yet we yearn for peace all of us.

It's these microcosyms that provide the building blocks for the grand conflagrations that befall us. In the 20th century, about 150 million people lost their lives to war and genocide violence perpetrated by human beings on human beings. While the reasons range from the selfish to the trivial, the underlying recurring theme is simply lack of communication.
What I find strange is that in this, the bloodiest of all centuries, we achieved our highest level of human intelligence. Yet it served also to reveal our most depraved nature.

My interpretation is that a yawning gap developed between the 'haves' and 'have-nots'. And as long as you have this situation, this dichotomy of inequality, the seeds of discontent will be sown and harvested with seasonal regularity. Key to overcoming this impasse are the fundamental issues of education, health and poverty. A people that is free of disease and is educated, is less susceptible to conflict and far more amenable to progress. Organizations such as UNESCO and Rotary are in the frontlines in the fight against these malignant impediments.

It has been said that the Age Of Discovery is giving way to the Age Of Survival. I would like to suggest that, instead, we should be ushering in an Age Of Human Awareness - a time where God's greatest creation is allowed to flourish in a setting free of hatred.

You may think this impossible. Yet all it takes to start the ball rolling is for you (and I) to reach out to your neighbour in peace.

Surely a lasting peace is greater than the individuals who broke it in the first place.

Yawa vows to root out corruption involving learners and driving licenses

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa says that 73 applicants have until tomorrow (Friday, 5 March 2010) to respond to allegations that learners licenses in their possession were fraudulently issued last year at the Rustenburg Driving License Testing Centre (DTLC).

The license scam involving a cashier employed by Rustenburg Local Municipality was discovered by the Management representative of the centre in August 2009.
The investigation into the alleged scam was concluded by the provincial inspectorate in December.

Failure by the applicants to respond to letters written to them by the provincial department will automatically cancel their learners and driving licenses obtained thereafter.

As part of its intensified effort to root out corruption relating to fraudulent issuing of learners and driving licenses, MEC Yawa's department has recently suspended six examiners at Koster (1), Hartbeesfontein (1), Carletonville(2) and Fochville(2) DTLC's.

Two of the officials suspended as examiners are employed by Merafong Local Municipality as management representatives.

“We'll spare no effort to root out corrupt elements in order to safeguard the integrity of our licensing system,” vows Yawa.

ACCESS TO HOUSING IS A DEMOCRATIC AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT - MEC DESBO MOHONO

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, said that International Women's Day is the right moment to assess the extent of success registered by the democratic government in its efforts to expand access to quality housing to the women of the country.

Mohono reminded all South Africans that access to housing is a democratic and constitutional right for all citizens, including women. She said her department is responsible for ensuring the progressive realization of this right, and will not rest until this right becomes a reality to all women of the North West.

She challenged all women to participate actively in the housing delivery programmes of government and to monitor the quality of houses that are being constructed in their communities. She added that women should take the responsibility of ensuring women's access to decent and quality housing.

The department is using this year's International Women's Day to reaffirm its commitment to the right of all women to access housing and to avail opportunities for emerging women contractors.

PROVINCIAL TREASURY TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO THE MUNICIPALITIES

The North West Provincial treasury is to render technical support to the municipalities to increase the quality of services that are delivered to the communities.

This was announced by MEC Mabe during the tabling of the provincial budget speech recently.
Mabe said her department will provide hands on support to the municipalities to ensure effective service delivery and sound financial management. She further announced that an amount of R29m which will increase over the Medium Term and Expenditure Framework (MTEF) has been set aside to assist municipalities.

“With regard to support to municipalities, the financial management capacity is improving although there are still serious challenges in municipalities. Provincial Treasury and the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs have been working together to assist Municipalities to improve service delivery. An amount of R29m has been set aside and will be increased over the MTEF to assist municipalities. As provincial government we urge municipalities to cooperate with teams that we deploy to assist them. We cannot continue to work in silos whereas the Constitution mandates us to cooperate and have an integrated approach in doing our business”, said MEC.

The technical support would also include among others the assistance with new budgeting format, the implementation of the Generally Recognized Accounting Practice (GRAP) and Generally Accepted Municipal Accounting Practice (GAMAP), training and capacity building programmes for municipal officials and councilors, focusing on the job training and skills development respectively. Mabe said both the National and Provincial Treasuries have engaged with municipalities on the new budget format which will address issues of service delivery backlogs, roll-overs and lack of spending of funds by the municipalities.

“These interventions will assist municipalities to maintain effective financial management systems to reduce the number of qualified audit reports”, said Mabe.

The MEC announced the procurement system reform by National and Provincial Treasuries to combat fraud and corruption during tendering processes. “We are compelled to review the process this year because we fully agree that this is a bucket that continuously leaks resources that must assist the poor. To reduce corruption and lower the costs of procuring goods and services, government intends to reform the procurement system. Greater transparency including electronic procurement systems and competitive tendering processes will guarantee value for money”, said the MEC.

Stakeholders resolve to work together towards a better life for Farm Workers

North West Key role players in the emancipation of North West farm workers vowed to ensure realistic implementation of the resolutions as adopted during the end of a two day Farm Workers' summit held at Haartebeespoort Dam in the Bojanala Platinum District on the 4th and 5th of March 2010.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) working together with the North West Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Rural Development, involved Provincial Departments, Labour Movements, Human Rights Commission, various Provincial Agricultural Unions, all came under one roof to discuss challenges experienced by farm workers, with the view to eventually develop a focused programme aimed at addressing those challenges.
More than 200 farm workers and dwellers from various farms in the North West attended this summit, which deliberated largely on aspects such as the living and working conditions of farm workers as well as their constitutional rights and empowerment programmes.

Addressing delegates on the rationale behind this initiative, the National Chairperson for Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Honorable Mlungisi Johnson said the basic purpose of this summit is to provide an open platform for all stakeholders to submit their solution oriented contributions in dealing with the plight of farm workers.

“We want to listen to the farm workers, farm dwellers and farmers themselves, and jointly strategise and develop a mutual plan that we will implement and monitor together as partners”, stated Mr Johnson.
The summit resolved to amongst others, ensure the establishment of a Provincial Structure for Farm workers and dwellers, expose farm workers to basic education and skills development, advocate for the development of a Policy to govern burial on farms, and the expansion of comprehensive health care programmes and social services to farms.

Rendering a message of support during the last day of the summit, MEC for Agriculture, Conservation, Environment, and Rural Development, Mr Boitumelo Tshwene said he is convinced that only unity and transparency can make the goals of the envisaged Strategic plan achievable and sustainable.

MEC Tshwene challenged delegates to spare nothing of their strength, their courage and their wisdom, until the benefits of the Farm Workers Strategic Framework objectives (to be adopted during the National summit), are realized.

The National Farm Workers' Summit will be held in May this year, after all provinces have hosted theirs.

The resolutions of provincial summits will serve as the basis for the National Strategic Framework or government policy formulation aimed at addressing the plight of farm dwellers, farm workers and farm owners.
