Meet the Mayor face to face
Good news for the residents of Matlosana! You now have a chance to meet
the Executive Mayor, Ofentse Mogale face to face.
This is because Mayor Mogale will be embarking on a series of imbizos
throughout Matlosana this month in a bid to personally capture your
concerns. Don't stay at home, get out and meet the Mayor. This is your
chance to register your concerns and expectations with him.
Tell the Mayor what you need as the community of Matlosana and when. He
is ready to listen to you and you might miss a chance to make meaningful
contribution to your community development should you choose to stay
away.
Let's face it, there are lot of things that need HIS attention as far as
matters of service delivery are concerned.
Think about the state of roads in your area, the level of crime,
unemployment, need for housing and many more others. What are you
waiting for? Ready yourself to meet Mogale because he is making himself
available to you. GRAB THIS OPPORTUNITY. This is participatory democracy
at its best: PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST.
So, make your voice heard as this is very much important. Remember, this
will be Mogale's FIRST public engagement since he was sworn in as the
Executive Mayor of the City.
Share with him your frustrations and become partners in a quest for
better life for all. He too, has news for you. Whatever you are planning
to do, make sure you don't MISS your appointment with Mayor Mogale.
Ask questions and make suggestions. Remember, the aim is for all to
benefit in this one-on-one encounter. TOGETHER, we can do more
Helping to improve reading
Learners at Alabama Secondary School, situated outside Klerksdorp in the
Matlosana area, have taken a keen interest in a computer-based learning
aid that helps to improve their reading ability and speed.
The school purchased the Academix reading program with a R25 000
donation that AngloGold Ashanti's Great Noligwa Mine had raised through
their charity golf day held late last year. Zanette Schenk, deputy
principal seen here tutoring a group of Grade 8 learners, explained that
the English and Afrikaans program improves eye span and recognition of
both words and forms.
All learners have access to the program that has been installed on 40
computers. “After reading at a specific level, learners test their
understanding by answering questions before they are allowed to go to
the next level,” Zanette said. “We are delighted with the results that
we are getting... The reading ability and speed of our learners have
improved at a remarkable pace. They are usually immensely excited when
their results are printed out as proof of their progress.”
THE RESIDENTS OF MATLOSANA ARE HEEDING THE CALL AND ARE ATTENDING THE
MAYORAL IMBIZOS
The City of Matlosana Mayoral IMBIZO Roadshow, led by Executive Mayor,
Ofentse Mogale and his entourage of Councillors, Municipal Manager and
Directors kick-started on a very high note.
As indicated in the previous statement, the main purpose of these
Imbizos is for the Executive Mayor to have an opportunity to meet with
the residents eye to eye, interact and listen to their concerns which
will allow him to have first hand information in terms of service
delivery related issues.
The Executive Mayor, Ofentse Mogale emphasized and explained to the
community that as a public figure, one of his major tasks is to now and
then go to the communities and listen to their complaints and give
feedback on issues raised.
On Thursday 15 April 2010, we visited the community of Stilfontein where
the Imbizo was held at Peoples Hall. The Council representatives were
met by excited residents, some of whom could not hide their happiness
about the long-awaited visit. This was Mogale’s first imbizo since he
was appointed as the Mayor. Different concerns, issues and advices were
raised by members of the community and were later responded to by the
Executive Mayor and his team.
From the floor both the well behaved white and black members of the
community spoke with one word. They mentioned that indeed they are happy
with the services rendered by the municipality. But they also had
mentioned their needs and a series of concerns, e.g, lack of
recreational facilities, unbearable conditions at the cemetery and lack
of road signs.
Saturday, the 17th April the entourage stopped at Umuzimuhle Hall,
mining residential area of Vaal Reefs. The community packed the hall as
they came in numbers from different areas which include Midvaal ,
Harties and Buffel Ridge.
The community was given the platform to air their complaints, concerns
as well as their views. It came out clear from the deliberations that
our people residing in the mining areas, some of whom came about thirty
years or so in South Africa, still could not differentiate as to which
services are rendered by the Municipality and what is being rendered by
the Mines.
This exercise was an eye-opener that as Municipality we are faced with a
mammoth task to assist these communities in terms of intervention and
negotiations with the employer, the mines and all other stakeholders
involved.
Most of the complaints cited were in line with acquiring permanent
housing, as the ones they occupy belong to the Mines, some are
unemployed, due to mine closure and retrenchment, youth and women
development projects and a lot more. Some residents from Napir and
Bekker farm areas also shared their frustrations. Until Saturday, the
residents were under the impression that the City of Matlosana has been
neglecting them. They have also been thirsty to meet the Council face to
face.
To close the first leg of the Imbizos, the City of People on the Move,
went to Khuma on Sunday. The Imbizo which was scheduled to take place at
14:00, Khuma Stadium, had to be postponed due to the strong and windy
weather.
The Executive Mayor apologized the masses before releasing them, “we
cannot risk with our people’s lives, and we would like to take this
opportunity to thank you for the efforts you took by heeding the call of
this important gathering” he said. The community will be informed of the
new date of their visit in due course.
As for the remaining Imbizos (see the advert below), contact your Ward
Councillor, read the posters and flyers and listen to the radios. We are
saying to the communities out there, please make it your business not to
miss this opportunity. It is your call to attend these important
gatherings.
To us City of Matlosana, you are an important role player and therefore
your concerns is our concern. We appeal to you the beautiful residence
of the City of the People on the MOVE, to come out in numbers and make
use of this opportunity to say your say.
“TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT, AS ONE TEAM WITH ONE VISION”
Anna Turns 100
On the 17th of April, Anna Monnapula, a resident of Emmanuel Centre for
the disabled and elderly people turned 100 years old.
To celebrate her birthday, Miss Matlosana - Laura Danielz and the His
People Church arranged a birthday party for her.
Sponsors who donated cakes and food for the event include, ABI,
Overland, OK, Go Big Media, Simba and Tusk Rio Casino.
Local youth groups including tribal dancers, choirs as well as the Anglo
Gold Ashanti Choir entertained the residents of Emmanuel House.
Miss Matlosana collected blankets, groceries and clothing which were
also given to the residents on the day of the party.
Impressive Start for Matlosana AGA LIONS in 2010 SSWBS
The AngloGold Ashanti Sport Club for the Disable's SuperSport Wheelchair
Basketball team the Matlosane AGA Lions started their 2010 SuperSport
Wheelchair Basketball Series campaign with a convincing victory of 59 51
over the Pretoria Pumus on Saturday 17 April 2010.
In an impressive display of skill and commitment the Lions build up a 37
21 lead at the half time break and extended their lead to 21 points (51
30) at the end of the third quarter. After loosing captain and
international star Thandile Zonke early in the fourth quarter the team
lost focus and allowed Pumas to out score them 8 21 and in the process
missed out on a possible bonus point for scoring 65 or more points.
Thandile Zonke (21 points), Daniel Nyuke (14 points) and Gift Mooketsi
(12 points) were the main contributors to the Matlosane AGA Lions score.
In their second game of the series the Matlosane AGA Lions was up
against the 2009 champions, the Pretoria Bladerunners. The Lions started
the match with all three their international players, Thandile Zonke,
Cecil Dumond and Gift Mooketsi, in an attempt to put the Bladerunners
under early pressure. The tactic worked from an offensive perspective
with the Lions scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Unfortunately a
combination of poor defence and too many turn over possession allowed
the Bladerunners to catch up and enjoy a 18 17 lead after the first
quarter. The Lions won the second quarter 19 15 to enjoy a three point
lead at the half time break.
The third quarter was an absolute disaster as the Bladerunners fired on
all cylinders to out play the Lions 22 8 and enjoy a 11 point lead at
the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter the Lions staged a fight
back but with no pressure the Bladerunners just protected their lead,
running down the clock, which left the Lions with insufficient time to
wipe out the deficit. The final score was 65 61 in favour of the
Bladerunners. Thandile Zonke (14 points), Daniel Nyuke (12 points) and
Gift Mooketsi (16 points) were again responsible for most of the points
scored. The rest of the team however all contributed when on court.
The Matlosana AGA Lions' next match is on Saturday, 1 May 2010, when
they will be taking on the current log leaders and 2009 runners up
Mandeville Eagles from Johannesburg. The Lions will however have the
services of Luvuyo Mbande who are currently playing in the Italian
Premier League.
This coming week promised to be an exciting week for South African
wheelchair basketball with the visit of the French national team but the
tour had to be cancelled due to the embargo on air travel to and from
Europe. This bad news for our players as it would have given the four
Lions' players in the national team (Thandile Zonke, Cecil Dumond, Gift
Mooketsi and Luvuyo Mbande) just the right preparation for the encounter
against the Eagles.
South Africans
break bread for peace, unity
People of all races, cultures and religions came together on Sunday at
events across the country to join hands and break bread in pursuit of
peace and goodwill in South Africa.
Simultaneous events in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Polokwane served
meals from some of South Africa's best chefs to raise money for children
in need.
The Cape Town event was held on the slopes of Table Mountain with a 300
metre table seating more than 700 people, including Western Cape premier
Helen Zille, ID leader Patricia de Lille, rugby legend Chester Williams,
singer Danny K and comedian Marc Lottering.
The Table of Peace and Unity was created ten years ago with the vision
of a long table where South Africans from all walks of life would share
a luncheon and show the country that a unified society holds the power
to heal a nation. The event also serves as a fundraiser, and has to date
raised more than R7 million for underprivileged children.
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said at the event that the good news
about bad times was that it brings good people together.
“In the past few weeks people have been getting an impression of South
Africa that I don't see here today,” she said, commenting on the sight
of a Jewish rabbi and a Muslim Imam breaking bread together. “That is
Cape Town, and that is South Africa,” she added.
Founder of the event, Christine Cashmore, added that while the past
months in South Africa have not been easy or uplifting, a nation built
on peace and unity was not unachievable.
“Peace and unity in South Africa is not a rainbow nation pipe dream. If
we want it, we have to work towards it, step by step. Each of us must be
committed to that goal; we need to ensure that others around us in our
lives become committed too. We all acknowledge that there are still
great divides between people - we have to work at narrowing those, at
showing a deeper understanding of our differences,” said Cashmore.
The event was also used to recognise organisations and individuals who
work to help children in underprivileged communities. Christine Booysens
and her husband, who have taken 30 homeless children into their home,
were among those recognised. According to Christine Cashmore, the
Booysens couple did this without being wealthy, but simply by sharing
what they have with those who have less.
Organisations to benefit from the campaign are the Haven of Strength,
Philisa Abafazi Bethu, Tiny Treasures Educare, Strandfontein Training
and Development Centre, First Community Resource Centre, Nceduluntu
Sanctuary Trust, Little Angels Educare and the Tygerberg Children's
Hospital.
The menu for the luncheon came from a selection of handpicked executive
chefs and their teams working without payment. This included Delia
Harbottle, Lauren Livesy and Peter Templehoff of the Marine Hotel, The
Liz McGrath Collection, Roberto De Carvalho the Twelve Apostles Hotel
and Spa and Jerome Peters from The Cape Peninsula University of
Technology.
They served up a gourmet meal including braised Karoo lamb with thyme
and rosemary crust, potato dauphinoise, and port wine sauce as the main
course, and a chocolate mousse pyramid with apple and saffron puree and
beetroot syrup for dessert.
They were assisted by students from Cape Town Hotel School and Capsicum
Culinary Studio.
Event founder Christine Cashmore concluded that a good life is possible
for all in South Africa, but it won't be served up on a platter like the
day's gourmet food.
”Let us make today the first day of our new resolution. Let's go out
there and do something, anything, to promote peace and unity - no matter
how small, just do it. This is our beloved country, it belongs to all of
us - we need to walk the talk or as Ghandi said 'We must be the change
we wish to see,'” said Cashmore.

Hulle wou graag saam mekaar en die onderwysers kuier, daar waar hulle
vir die afgelope vier en 'n half jaar pouses saam gekuier het.
Dit was volgens die Wessies 'n lekker dag van braai, speel en kuier wat
