Reducing energy consumption in mining and industrial operations -
seminar in Klerksdorp
There is still a critical power constraint in the country. This has been
temporarily alleviated by the economic downturn and the consequent
reduction in production. However, this downturn is not expected to
continue for much longer and with a steady economic recovery, South
Africa's power reserve margins will dwindle.
Sixteen leading experts in energy saving strategies have committed their
time and expertise to embark on a national series of technical seminars
to help businesses in the mining and industrial sectors save electricity
and save money.
One of these seminars will take place in Klerksdorp on 15 September
2010.
These experts, members of Mining and Industrial Energy Optimisation (MIEO),
present a range of practical options for engineering professionals to
implement cost-effective and sustainable systems-based energy saving
measures now in mining and industrial operations in order to cope with
the even bigger supply constraints that are expected in the near future.
Energy efficiency solutions can take up to two years to implement fully
and effectively reduce the energy demand of a mining or industrial site.
MIEO is a chapter of the Southern African Association for Energy
Efficiency (SAEE). Their efforts are underwritten by Eskom's Energy
Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM) department.
“Considering that 58% of South Africa's annual energy output is consumed
by the mining and industrial sectors combined, the critical importance
and influence of these sectors is apparent. This series of seminars is
an effective tool to promote the efficient use of electricity. The
seminars are specifically designed to facilitate face-to-face networking
between speakers and audience members, enabling them to share their
expertise and experiences.
The topics discussed illustrate how we can all derive significant
operational and monetary benefits,” says Nosipho Maphumulo, Eskom's
General Manager for EEDSM.
At Greyling, Engineering Manager, Electrical Division, AngloGold
Ashanti, will be the guest speaker and will present case histories of
the energy efficiency initiatives introduced at AngloGold Ashanti
leading on from the load shedding experienced in January 2008.
Rather than succumbing to alarm during this period of time, the
organisation sought to manage the situation, and ultimately used it as a
catalyst to review its energy efficiency performance, explore new
initiatives to decrease its electricity usage and speed up its
implementation programmes.
In addition to this, delegates will learn about energy saving solutions
from a range of presentations covering topics including pumps and
pumping systems; variable speed drives; materials handling systems;
compressed air; mining and industrial fans; energy measurement and
monitoring; steam systems and electric motors.
The seminar also provides a platform for the Demand Side Management and
Carbon funding processes and opportunities to be presented by Eskom and
Carbon Energy Africa respectively.
“As MIEO members, we are delighted to share our experience and expertise
with our engineering colleagues in the Klerksdorp area a mining
intensive area that is pivotal to the economic prosperity of South
Africa,” says Mario Kuisis, Chairman of MIEO.
Delegates can also look forward to a presentation to be delivered by Bo
Wallander, Chief Technical Advisor, Industrial Energy Efficiency
Projects, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), on
the priority placed on energy efficiency by the international community.
He will discuss the collective work being done by the International
Standards Organisation (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) and other international standards bodies in introducing an energy
management standard for industry which will permit energy reductions of
40% to 50% when implemented.
Plans for the local implementation of this are on track, with the
assistance of the Department of Energy and the Department of Trade and
Industry.
The seminar takes place at The Key Guest Villa in Orkney, on Wednesday,
15 September 2010, starting at 07h30 with networking concluding by
18h00. Mining and industrial professionals in and around Klerksdorp are
encouraged to register as soon as possible as seats are limited, at a
cost of R2,750.

Women in local
government stand against poverty
To mark the end of women's month which was celebrated in August, the
women in the North West Department of Local Government and Traditional
Affairs took a stand against poverty by donating food parcels and
clothes to impoverished families in Extension 39 near Mmabatho.
Chief Director of Local Government, Mapatane Kgomo, said the initiative
came during a women's dialogue, a platform she recently created for
women in her chief directorate to discuss issues affecting women from
health to business with specific focus on women empowerment.
She said it was during one of these sessions that it came to light that
there are impoverished families in Extension 39 which are mainly headed
by unemployed women.
“Their children cannot access government grants due to the fact their
parents don't even have identity documents and we decided to contribute
the little that by donating clothes and food parcels.
Let us count our blessing and lend a helping hand where we can”, she
said.
The project was facilitated by Botlhale Mofokeng, Director for Municipal
Finance and Support in the department. She said she was moved by the
conditions in which these families live and vowed to assist.
“These women are faced with different social challenges on daily basis
and strive for a better life each day. I'm not saying that we can carry
the world on our shoulders but this is an opportunity for us to do our
bit as women in local government”,
She said.

COMRADES WELCOMES NEW
MAJOR SPONSOR
On Monday 6 September the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) announced
the acquisition of a fourth Major Sponsor for the world's oldest and
biggest Ultra race, the Comrades Marathon!
Gary Boshoff, General Manager of the CMA stated: “The CMA is delighted
to announce that the Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education & Training
Authority (THETA), one of twenty-three (23) Sector Education & Training
Authorities in South Africa and the one responsible for Sport, has
joined the Comrades family of sponsors and partners as a Major Sponsor
for the next four years, from 2011 to 2014”.
THETA has been involved with the Comrades Marathon since 2008 when the
organisation came on board to assist the CMA's Underprivileged Runner's
Project, a project assisting underprivileged Comrades athletes with
travel, accommodation and food. This partnership grew stronger in 2009
and 2010 where the CMA hosted five (5) final year Sport Management
students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) as Interns over
a two-month period to gain practical experience in the workplace. The
internship program laid the foundation for the present major sponsorship
deal.
The importance of training and developing professionally qualified
sports professionals has never been more relevant in South Africa than
at the present time and the CMA and THETA hope to drive the need for
greater investment in the training of sports professionals with this
partnership.
Through its association with the Comrades Marathon THETA will facilitate
in-service training opportunities for sports professionals through the
CMA and other major sports events and federations, while at the same
time seeking to promote and highlight the need for employers in the
sports sector, be it government, public benefit or commercial sports
entities, to prioritize training and development in the South African
sport industry. This is a prerequisite for sustainable improvement
towards excellence and quality delivery.
Mike Tsotetsi, Chief Executive Officer of THETA is excited and
enthusiastic about the prospects envisaged through the partnership and
he believes that athletes from all sports and all walks of life will
eventually benefit from this project. He elaborated on the partnership
in the following manner: “The Comrades Marathon Association is renowned
for the high standards it consistently maintains in organising an event
of the magnitude of the Comrades Marathon. THETA is therefore proud to
be associated with the Comrades Marathon and together we will endeavour
to spread the important message of skills development, education and
training, for the sports industry”.
While the partnership incorporates an extensive financial investment in
The Ultimate Human Race by THETA, it is much more than a sponsorship. In
fact, added Boshoff: “The projected benefits of the partnership go far
beyond the Comrades Marathon; it is aimed at those underprivileged
coaches, administrators, technical officials and managers who have been
marginalised and excluded from the mainstream and who need support to
gain the necessary expertise to be competitive in the modern sport
industry”.
The CMA and THETA are committed to excellence in sport and aim to use
their respective resources and brands to create opportunities and
advance quality delivery in the sport industry.

DEPARTMENT INCREASES NUMBER OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AT HEALTH FACILITIES
Access to much needed health services at health facilities in the
North-West Province is improving as the department continues to recruit
more health professionals.
More than 630 health professionals have been appointed in provincial
health facilities from April to August 2010. Appointments include 84
nursing assistants, 30 staff nurses, 19 medical officers, 42 medical
specialist, 30 emergency care officers, 23 professional nurses, 39
emergency care assistance, 102 student nurses, dieticians and
pharmacists. These appointments were done in a bid to ensure improved
access to quality health care services delivery in public health
facilities. The move follows a commitment by MEC Rebecca Kasienyane at
the Provincial Health Consultative Forum in March 2010 to fill critical
vacant posts at public health facilities, which contribute to extended
waiting period. The health professionals are already contributing
extensively to the provision of appropriate quality health services in
clinics, hospitals and health programmes.
The department continues to respond faster to improve the health status
of communities through implementation of integrated health programme,
provide accessible, equitable and affordable comprehensive primary
health care service.
Despite various measures to increase access to health care, the province
faces the challenge of retaining medical professionals. However, the
department remains hopeful that pursuit goal for universal access to
quality health care services will be reached.
